My point proved Paul is a pure perfectionist ! 2400 grit wet or dry I only use 1200 mainly because of price up to 1200 is a 45p per sheet but 2000 costs 99p seems a step to far for me but then I’ll prob never match pauls superb finish. however 40 coats Paul that really is dedication with a finish like that I’d be loathed to put her on the water let alone open the taps.

Phil, Paul has yet to put his on the water…….

Paul. Did your computer factor in the weight and distribution of all that varnish ???

Wont go on the water until next season, busy rebuilding the engine for better performance. The weight of the varnish is offset by the ease of which the boat will glide through the water.

I will open up the taps and risk damage to the varnish (I will then have to do it all again)
with the go faster bits on the engine it should fly.

” the ease of which the boat will glide through the water.”     makes me larf !!!

I like to polish the hulls of my…faster.. boats , as it always makes them faster (psychologically) and , if nothing else, stops so much pond muck sticking to them.

I believe the last type 42 destroyer to be refitted has some super duper new anti-fouling paint on the  bottom and its claimed the boat is a knot or so faster. As i understand it this stuff is self abrading so it wears away over the years taking the jolly old barnacles with it.

Berengars HMS Argus has paint like that, or is it because of the speed it gets driven into things??

Paul, can you remind me of the (last) intended motor setup??

              Assuming two models….each weighing 40 lb each……..

One is a Destroyer with a deep vee hull

One is flat bottomed like Slo Mo Shun

Which model will be the faster, with the same motor drive?

They will both displace the same volume of water, since they weigh the same……but I think Slo Mo will be the faster?… for no logical reason!

              .What does the team think?

Just a Sunday morning idle thought………..Bob

You missed something there Bob the barrel back isn’t really a deep v much more of a flat v  (very low draft mine is only 11/2″) prob has a wetted area equal to the Slo Mo just doesn’t have quite the planing ability however I do think it’d be a close match and wouldn’t bet either way

Bob. A quandary here with your hypothetical question…

The destroyer would undoubtedly be faster that a flatty starting with a low power motor, but if the power was increased , it would reach a point where the flatty would start to plane and then IT would be faster.  I think thats right….

My little 30 inch HMS Midge torpedo boat (1890`s variety), which I built with a my customary “Glynn Guest” style flat bottom, is long/thin and fairly light and ridiculously fast on a speed 400, 6v 4.5 Ahr gel battery and ordinary 30mm 3 blade brass prop. The front lifts out of the water at full pelt just like the Turbinia.  Now and again for a larf I put my 7.2v 2500mAhr NiMh battery in , and it almost planes. If it had a square back, like turbinia, I am sure is would.

Slo mo shun is a hydroplane and as such is designed for higher speeds than a normal speedboat and should run rings around a barrel back.
But I doubt that in a straight, half hour race Bobs feeble electric powered model will be a match for my IC powered monster.

                      Ashley:
In answer to your question the barrel back will be powered by IC (noise, fumes, oil, petrol everything that the eco chaps are trying to stamp out) so I am doing my bit to be green by “hot rodding” the engine so that it will go faster

I know exactly what you mean Bob! It’s a similar situation with my homewood landing although there isn’t quite as much scope for ingenuity. I have got a device coming from mr Milbourne that is essentially a linear voltmeter, it will light up 4 small diodes on the dash which progressively extingquish as the motor bty voltage drops that should add to the appearance of the dash along with some dials.

I`ve been thinking of a test float lately……..I`m a bit shy at the moment!……..it looks so outrageous!

The club has a Frostbite sail, on the 27th………Probably the ideal day!……..Will get Duckie to tow it round …….for a few piccies?……………….Weather permitting of course!
