I was in my cabin this morning, whilst the rain poured down! It must be at least 3  days now I won’t have to try and water plants before they die!

I was using my Permagrit files to shape some wood and I thought how useful these tools have been, (and not just for model making); I must have had some of them at least 20 years.

I wondered if anyone has the the same experience with a tool originally bought for model making?

Or a tool that they couldn’t do without now?

I have a very simple favourite tool dating back to 1970 when my Wife to be bought me a boxed modelling tool set with various craft knives, files and other modelling tools in a presentation case as an engagement present. One of these was a simple small file with no handle, just a tang. Over the decades this little tool has been incredibly useful, not just in filing but also reversed to use the tangent in a variety if situations.

Six months ago it went walkabout from my worktop and I have scoured my workshop trying to find it without success.

I fear it is gone forever but no idea how. I really do miss it.

I have a small slotted screwdriver like that, I think my Dad gave it to me when I must have been about 14 or 15. Don’t think it was new then but I still  reach for it now even though I have several newer ones of the same or similar size.

Not bad for something over 60 years old.

It’s not always been used as a screwdriver as well, it was just the right size to open Humbrol tins or lever Warhammer bottles open!

Wonderful things…permagrit tools. Have blocks and files.

The small and large bansaws are my faves though. Couldn’t live without them ( metaphorically speaking)

I have two tools that have been a part of my life since a teenager.  The first is a pair of tweezers that my father gave me in my teens.  I still use them frequently today despite buying many more pairs since.  They just have a feel about them that is comfortable and I use them frequently when modelling.  I even use clothes pegs to close the tweezers together to use as fine clamps when required.

The second is probably my first ever purchase of a specific modelling tool.  When in my early teens I bought myself a stanley knife.  I wanted a general purpose knife that was sharp enough to do plastic modelling with but robust enough to be able to cut through thicker materials.  It has a retractable blade which was a very innovative thing in its day.  I can’t imagine how many blades have been through that knife in the over fifty years I have been using it.  I even used it in my teens to mix paint in, which still sits in the handle to this day.  It was originally a metallic gunmetal colour but there isn’t any paint left on the outside now, all been worn away by my own hands.  I’d be lost without it as I still use it for those jobs requiring a more robust cutting tool.
