My Builds and Future Projects

As mentioned in my H31 Build Blog my intention is to get all my Fairey builds on the water before starting anything else and that’s what I’m doing. I’ve finished painting the H31 hull (just needs some minor paint bleeds remedying) and all the gear has been installed ready to give it a run on the lake. I’ve done a bit on the superstructure but that and the detailing will be done later. In the bath it does sit slightly bow down, as some tend to and not unexpected, but not enough to affect it planing so I will see how it goes.

Like the H31 the hull sides to the Swordsman (this was the first build I started 8 years ago before it got side-lined by others!) were painted in white and have been left for a few weeks for the paint to fully harden before sticking masking tape to it for the blue bottom. That’s had a couple of coats of primer-undercoat which will be followed by at least one more before glossing. I’ve also done some work on the superstructure including painting the cabin/cockpit sides in blue. Then the bath test and finishing the installation ready for lake tests as well.

Started painting the superstructure of the H28 as well.

The Fisherman was my last but one build started and will be the last on the water as the little Faun just nipped in! Fisherman has had the deck painted and I will move onto the hull in due course. I will try it on the water before moving onto the sails.

I always said I’d have a number finished all at the same time (but not there yet) but didn’t expect it to be seven!

As I’ve said before, I don’t tend to do much building at this time of year, but I did make some progress during the inclement weather we had awhile ago and have done a bit before it gets too hot in the back bedroom as it’s been too hot to do much else including riding my motorbike!

As regards my future projects I’ve mentioned before that for a water-jet model which was based on the hull of the Lesro Rapier, but much more modern superstructure. Drawings were done quite a long time ago and the TFL water-jet was bought.

I’ve also bought an outboard, again TFL, and produced drawings for that, based on the same hull but with a sports fisherman superstructure. Was going to use it on a bigger and modified Lesro Sprite I’d drawn up for a friend but decided against it in the end.

And finally. No more Faireys (an Atalanta was thought of a long time ago, so never say never, but unlikely I think) but there is a connection as I’ve started drawings for a Bruce Campbell Christina 25. The hull for the 23 foot version used the Huntress hull but I’m building the slightly longer 25 foot version. Hulls were initially provided by Fairey but then by another company. I shall progress the drawings but won’t start until later in the year.

Hi Chris.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>I’ve thought once or twice about your water jet boat which you mentioned last year.  I’m looking forward to hearing about your progress.  I noticed the drawings show some difference in the hull shapes.  Any reason for that or is it just designers licence?  I’m also guessing your using CAD for your designs.</p>

Hi Philip – the reason for the difference is that with the water-jet model it needed a flat section at the rear for the water intake. Also the slope at the transom is slightly different to suit the mounting of the different units.

Not CAD but I use a drawing program called Microsoft Visio but it’s not really designed for this job. But I’ve made it work, though it does some weird things sometimes. I used to use it at work for buildings having learnt on the drawing board.

I do have TurboCAD which I’ve looked at a couple of times but not learned or used it yet. It’s a steep learning curve!

I banged my head against various Auto Cad software over the years, all of which were way to complex for the basic diagrams I wanted to put together.  Then I discovered Visio and haven’t looked back since.  It is surprising just how useful a package it is.

My professional life was Autocad and Solidworks. On retirement I lost both. Then by chance I found out Solidworks do a home based strictly personal use version of the professional version that I used to use. £50 a year which is a bargain as far as I am concerned. It water marks the drawing sheets but that’s not an issue for my usage.
