      Hi Eddie,

That should stop the wind escaping under the rig, with the Thames barges we try & keep the sails as low as possible, just tell the helm to duck when tacking or gybing

Hi. Ray,Chris, how does she look now, not on the water, I know but most probably take her to Wicksteed on Sunday.

        dscf3164.jpg

I had a look at the plans again last night, there are no drawings or instructions for the mast other than a few words in the article, I remember now that I based the mast on the plans for the sails and how the mast for Varmint had been constructed only this time I used aluminium tube.

I also saw this in the current issue of Classic Boats and thought of you Ray.

        dscf3162.jpg

I also found this in the same mag.

I thought it might be interest to someone but was hidden away from mainstream modelling.

        Eddie.

          Hi Eddie

Sorry I didn't mean to come over as being critical though I suppose I was being! And certainly didn't intend for you to do any extra work, was just interested on what your thoughts were on my observation.

But now you have done it, it certainly looks better and more balanced!

It is really elegant and the sort of yacht that I would want to build. But I have enough projects on the go and in my head so it could be sometime off. To have a go at sailing I bought one of those ARTR HydroPro Affinity RG65 yachts which is great fun. I'd certainly like to build something myself at some stage though.

          Chris

Hi, Chris I did not take your comments as a criticism, just a helpful observation, which is always welcome.

I am trying to resist the urge to build John Goodyear's Alpha at the moment and I am not sure if I will succeed, when I go to Abington park our local model shop is less than a mile up the roaddont know

Very pretty yacht indeed Eddie, you must be delighted. If I hadn't just ordered myself an Aeronaut Bellissima…

Yes I am pleased with the way she has turned out, and with the help and comments I have had from you all on this forum.

I saw the Bellisima at the model shop at Chatham Dockyard when I visited with my friend last year and was tempted then, but I am pleased with the route I have taken so far, there are so many boats out there that it is difficult to make a choice. I do like the build process and that influences my choice.

That's a really good looking boat Eddie. Congratulations. yes

The advice to lower the sails was good in my opinion.

What is next on your slipway?

Hi, Tim, Thank you for those kind remarks, I am pleased with the look of the boat now with the lowered sails, it's nice to have the input from others with more experience and knowledge than myself, I have yet to try her on the water but hopefully this weekend down at the Ramsgate Vikings MBC she will get further trials, I am still on a steep learning curve as far as sail boats are concerned! I did take her to Wicksteed last weekend but the wind was too strong for me, I didn't want to get her swamped.

My next boat may well be John Goodyear's Alpha as I would like another smaller boat that I can sail in stronger wind conditions, after that I am planning to build Duet, another cabin cruiser, sail of course!

I like the idea of a planked hull, I have made two smaller boats that were planked with balsa, but I want to try it with real wood.

                    Eddie.

                      Hi Eddie

Have you looked at Chez-When the Radio Modeller plan for the Silhouette, the real boat is only 16ft long the model is 2" to the foot, it's on my list to build comes out 34" long the original had bilge keels & a skeg/rudder, the model has a fin with 2.5 lbs of lead. Around 14" beam S a r I k do the plans

                      Regards Ray

Hi Ray/Derek, thanks for your suggestions, I will take a look at them. You don't want me to sit around with nothing to do, do you?

Derek did you find the video of what I think is an Ardent? you will find it on youtube if you search with 'sailing ardent'.

although it is a 43' boat it is double chine and the cabin is very similar, see what you think.

Thanks, Eddie. I found Ardent straight away on youtube – liked the music as well. It looks as the the yacht in the video may be an enlarged version of the original design.

Chez When looks a rather nice little boat, Graham. You still often see full size ones for sale, especially on eBay. Originally built by Hurley Yachts in timber and then in GRP and also sold as a home build.

It looks a real sturdy job Eddie – very seaworthy by the look of it. I found those original magazine photos (of Peter Holland) in a box of old black and white shots that were about to be thrown out.

According to my inflation calculator tool thingy, £1 in 1971 would be worth £14.73 today. The 1971 plan price excludes P&P – maybe it's something to do with the ridiculous increase in postage since then?

Some of the cost now is because Sarik have to do a search to find the plans because the original publication was so long ago and I believe that they mention having to make sure that the plans can be reasonably well reproduced, so there would appear to be a fair amount of their time involved as well. That alone does not come cheap these days.

That's right Derek, they do say that there is a £5-00 surcharge included in the price, but in the grand scheme of things that is not a lot to pay.

I have been sailing with the Ramsgate Vikings this morning at their water at Westcliffe Ramsgate, the weather was not the best, cold, damp and with light winds, this is the first time on the water with the extra weight in the stern and with the lowered sails, it was difficult to get a feel for how she handled due to the light winds and the buildings around the pond, however I have added a couple of pictures of her on the water.
