      Hi Ian,
I know I am am a bit late with this but have only just noticed the extra inputs to this topic. The photos of the equipment including a hand held planer are very similar to that which I made. However I think you have to ensure the planer is fixed down as it may well jump our, ugh!
I am sure you will find this idea useful.
      Rick.

        Ian,

        Thanks for the compliments.
I misunderstood the depth of cut you were looking to achieve, the saw to which I made reference is a great piece of kit nevertheless and I use it mostly for reducing wide sheets of wood down to narrow planks as required. It works out cheaper than buying planks in the smaller widths, which is where the saw soon pays for itself.

hi Ian agree with Neil. Don’t play around with these machines. Highly dangerous and not worth the effort for a kick back.  Also it is difficult for the man at home to be able to plane the wood to the desired thickness without factory machinery.  I saw my timber strips 2-3 mm thick and up to 20-25 mm wide on a table saw.  The wood that i use is meranti because it is a soft wood and sands down well.  But BELIEF me i am very cat foot and keep my fingers away from from the blade.

            Dennis,
Sorry not to have answered your post sooner. I have more or less decided to invest in a good table saw when funds allow.
It is  useful to have pitfalls and possible dire consequences pointed out. I know it is very easy to become blase about working with machine tools and things have only got to go wrong once! I have had many a near miss. I worked in a furniture factory when I was a student and hardly any of the old hands had the full compliment of fingers!

              Hi Ian,

I am currently engaged on making a number of 1:50 scale model ‘dhows’ for which I need to prepare various wood species in strips ranging from 3 to 8mm wide and 1 to 2.5mm thick.   Remember the old electric drill sets where you could add bits and pieces to make a lathe, bench saw etc?  Well I still have one so I am able to cut my wood strips to an approximate size.  To true these up and reduce thickness to a uniform smoothness I use my Dremel router table with a drum sander in place of a router.  Yes, it turns much of my wood into dust but it works.
Will be posting some pics of my efforts one of these fine days.  Have some on my website but don’t know if posting that URL is allowable here???

              Regards,
              Robin

                Hi Robin,
The beginning of this thread seems a long way away now but I need to prepare sheets up to 3” wide. I use a bandsaw to cut my wood and wanted a way of cleaning it up accurately- I currently use a block plane and sanders. I think I will invest in a table saw  after much consideration.
Incidentally, I bought a Dremel tool and router table last year- one of those tools you wonde how you managed without, unlike other purchases which are hardly ever used and just take up space!
I can’t see why you shouldn’t link to your own website- I’m sure we’d all be interested, but I may be speaking out of turn.
                All the best,
                Ian
