      It's a Marblehead, Mark, so 50".

There'll be deck pictures once the hull's done, but my chum, who gave it to me, laid that so it stays.

      Cheers,

      Martin

Well, a dear old friend had it. He got it from the loft of a house in which Tommy Sopwith had lived. He was known to have been a keen model yachtsman.

My friend gave me the yacht just before he sadly died. He had laid the deck in between times. The model also came with some very early Braine gear and an ally mast.

I have no sails for it.

          Cheers,

          Martin

Look to be nicely made Mark. Where are they from?

Must say, I'd make this sort of thing on my wee lathe.

Mark, no, after sanding it down, the weather turned and I've had other stuff to take my time. If the w/e is reasonably dry and warm, I'll do the epoxying of the hull.

Not sure if the atmosphere is 12% humidity or not!

Hi martin any progress on your hull ? I've been busy making the servo tray ! I've used my futabe 6exa to set them up but I'm not sure I can use it for sailing ,I read somewhere airborne transmitters can't be used for ground craft ?? what do you use for your boats ??img_20151108_164058109.jpg

                      Hi Mark,

no progress this weekend. I spent yesterday watching Lightning jets doing dusk afterburner runs at Bruntingthorpe and today it's been too damp to do much.

It's true you can't use air frequencies for ground craft. I have a selection of old 27 Meg R/C sets I can call upon. Although I did buy a 2.4 set, which I haven't used yet.

I'm working on a design for a geared motor sail winch operated off micro switches. Can't justify expensive sail winch servos just to do a fairly simple job and I have a lot of old motors.

                      Cheers,

                      Martin

Your Dad is the lucky guy! One of the three they have is from 111 Squadron. The so far non-working one, but they have 3 spare engines in the corner!

I once made a master for a 1/7th scale Lightning when I was making show cars in Germany. Never finished it, so I left on Mick Reeves' back door step (I live close to him). Never heard from him again, but I understand he has a 1/7th scale Lightning in his range! Couldn't afford a turbine after my stint working abroad came to an end (thanks to computers), but it would b years before I could fly something that difficult.

As to mechanisms, I'm fine with them, though not the electricals.

                          Cheers,

Hi all I've asked this question before and I'm asking again ….. I'm programming my servos (3) with my tx ,now only the channel 3 (throttle if your mode 2) has got the. return spring but the others haven't ! Can anyone please explain how you sail a boat like this as the sail servos re-centres ,do I remove the springs ?or is there a tx dedicated to boats ,but not one of those toy car ones with the wheel on the side my tx is expensive and I don't want to have to take it apart as I still have my planes ……any help would be great thanks ……….mark

                                  Mark,

as we have discussed elsewhere, you cannot use 35 Meg for your yacht, so will either have to get a cheapo 27 Meg or as cheap a 2.4 as you can find. Popular outfit for yachts and bats generally seems to be the Spektrum DX5e. I have one, but haven't used it yet for anything! No silly programming required with the DX5e.

                                  Cheers,

                                  Martin

Mark, you said you didn't want to take your expensive set apart as you still have your planes, by which I took you to mean you were using 35 Meg.

I think there's nothing cooler than a nice long aerial. To me that crooked stump on 2.4s couldn't be more UNcool!<G>

I have an idea of what I want to?? just thought I would ask others how they control there sails ! Maybe you do have to hold both sticks ??

I think springs can be removed, but of course, no ratchet to keep the stick where you want it.

                                            Gentlemen

Yachts usually have a non-centring stick to control the winch, with Stick = Down (Back) being sails fully in and Up (Forward) being fully out. A ratchet is handy to "hold" the stick in one of about 11 positions to set the sails.

Most multi-channel radio sets (i.e. 2 x dual axis sticks) are supplied with one spring-centred stick and one non-centring ratchet stick – generally used for aircraft throttle control. Mode 1 has the ratchet on the RH stick; Mode 2 has it on the LH stick. This is the arrangement for model aircraft, drones and helicopters which make up 99% of the use to which these sets are put. If you want to add a spring to the other stick then generally you have to buy and fit extra items, although some radio sets have the facility to change from one method to the other without extras – occasionally without even removing the rear of the case. So a standard radio should be supplied with the right set-up for a yacht; just chose which side of the Tx you want the sail control to be.

Like everything you get what you pay for. The Spektrum DX5e is popular and quite inexpensive. The Planet T5 is even cheaper but I've been told that its manufacture has ceased and supplies/stocks will quickly dry up, although strangely the receivers will still be available. Do be careful to check the range of the receiver in whatever set you buy. Some have what is called "park fly" range which is restricted to 50-100m in the air and will be less at ground level. I personally use and recommend Hitec radio sets.

If you want BOTH sticks with ratchets then you'll have to remove the spring from the other stick and possibly buy a ratchet spring/arm. You won't be able to buy a set with the transmitter set up like that out-of-the-box.

Thought I'd add a bit, hi Mark and co, Dave,

I make my own ratchet inserts for the Tx, its just a brass strip about 4mm wide, hole one end for the holding screw and for the ratchet engagement I simply solder a 0.5mm section of brass rod across the other. Do the solder first, then it's easier to approximate the hole position. I tried the sharp bend but the strip breaks.

Saves robbing another set, and so simple to fabricate. I think most of my units are on ratchet, even the rudders, as all the units have displays so I can see where the servo travel is.

You'll have fun with two winches and a rudder to control, I built a large cargo boat (6 feet) and had tank stick steering, rudder on RH stick and ramp up/down on LH stick plus an additional stick mounted about the aerial for the bow thruster left and right movement. Fingers and thumbs keep moving…… lets all have a cup o' tea.

                                                      Aye, Kimmo
