      NIce sail this afternoon!

Note steam pipes on Mintanic funnel, much better, removed portholes and froggy flag on the "Paris" top!

Am going to paint the bottom red.

Perhaps I was giving a false sense of the state of the lake with my muttering. It has always looked good, just the water levels and silting up.

Following the rain it seems to have topped up the lake (and we are only talking 2 or so inches here) and although the silt is still there you can’t see it so much now!

Small 25mm prop has been partially successful…the boat is not quite so quick, and I am going to leave it as it is for now.

Rolling is not so bad, but with balsa stringers inside the botTom coroners I don’t want to start grinding corners off to fit bilge keels.

One more top to be made with two funnels and this project will be finis.

Model looking really good – you have certainly captured the "feeling".

I checked for a top deck with 2 funnels hidden in the pictures.

As I said before, and I do realize the lack of a size reference, she just looks larger on the water in the pictures than her 23ins.

Size references in model pictures never help the illusion.

Cheers Chris. No hidden extra deck yet! Yes, the one I have of it next to a duck rather spoils it.

I have settled on a last top with one much larger blue funnel, having searched for pictures of boats with a blue funnel, the clever googly thing came up with steamers from the…..wait for it….

                BLUE FUNNEL LINE !!!

A couple in particular are good match approximately the centre deck arrangement I have and are of a similar vintage. The single large funnel will give the impression of a smaller ship, and the defining feature will be the rugby goalpost style crane derricks.

                Working on it.

Crane/Derrick setup made for the Blue funnel top…name not yet decided…..and looking good!

Funnel made (25mm dowel) and Blue paint drying, Humbrol, probably be dry enough for 2nd coat after tea time.

Hatches made, and cowl vents ordered. I will not be even attempting to make a dozen cowl vents, tootricky, in fact too tricky at any size. If I only had two big ones to make I might try I suppose.

Lifeboats and bridge will be last to do as they will rather set the apparent scale of the boat, and as this is a much smaller ship than the other two (tops) I need to be careful in order to make it look smaller.

The shed is wonderfully cool, and I have been in it with the door shut to keep out the heat although the paint has still been drying ridiculously fast.

Bottom of Mintanic now gloss red..only the first coat yet, but it has covered very well.

Made the third funnel for my single funnel Blue Funnel ship..first was cut to lean at 5 degrees, when it should have been dead upright. Second upright but too short……

Bridge sorted despite wot I said earlier, as I saw a bit of Mahogany laying there and the colour and size of it suddenly showed me the way. Lifeboats next to suit the bridge scale…tricky.

On the water snaps below shows spiffing smartness of it in GLORIOUS tekinculrour!

Water at least a force 10 gale, and there was a bit of moveable ballast in the tiller flat, but nowhere else.

Great Fun & the easiest way to take 3 models to the lake!

When I saw the pictures I was amazed at the size of the cowl vents but a little searching showed me that they really are (nearly) that large and are very much part of the character of the model.

It seems such a pity not to complete the set with a 2 funnel model. wink 2

Chris. Yes surprising how big the vents are. One picture I think shows them black so that’s what I went with, to stand out a bit.

Two funnels…got to be done… a side by side arrangement would be novel. More surfing read!

The “grace line” seems to fit the bill, so far…

the bonus being that I could use the Blue funnel focsle and quarterdeck as they are not a million miles off. I can easily make a second deckhouse, or whatever it is on the stern, to plug into the rearmost 2nd Derrick hole in the deck?

Spent yesterday and today fiddling with bits for the SANTA ROSA ! This ship has the desired different two funnel look, and as Chris pointed out, the funnels are not just bits of dowel (more on that later!)

White mastage seems to be one of the features so I have made another set. Another rear deck has been made as I have found a hidden feature that I would like to incorporate, and drawing pins come into this equation…any guesses?

The funnels, after some deliberation, have been made using card wrapped dowel!! They have the right shape, and I did not want to go all exotic and scratch build some mini-masterpieces….simplicity is the name of the game.

However, the lifeboats sit on a (I am sure there is a term for it) launching frame and not simply hang from davits. This may be tricky to simulate. Thinking hat on ….lifeboats will only be about an inch long.

If you remember I commented on the large vents on the Blue Funnel Model – well those on Santa Rosa look like masts/ cranes of some sort! The "vents" on the foredeck and aft deck are so tall that I do wonder if they are something else.
