Has anybody had their May 2021 Model Boats mag yet which was due to be available today – either digital or print? Or is it delayed?

No it's not delayed, mine arrived on Wednesday and others have received theirs too. No doubt your local friendly postie will arrive with it shortly. Official publcation date is actually today.

            Mine arrived this morning.

There is a very nice obituary for Dave Milbourn on page 12 accompanied by a picture of our old friend with a big beaming smile.

Colin has beautifully summed up all of our feelings about Dave and has eloquently written a fitting tribute to a model boating legend that I was honoured to call my friend.

Still no digital issue. Faith left me years ago.

If you consider how long it must take to get an issue printed and then packaged + postal time – say 2 weeks – it is very hard to understand how a digital copy that surely only takes minutes/hours couldn't have been done in the 2 week lead time of the print issue.

Look on the bright side, this months free plan is smoking hot

Do you get the plan with the digital issue ??

                    Regards Ray

Unfortunately no plans in the digital issue. This is very unfortunate as many plan articles are written assuming that the reader has access to the plans. Quite often even really basic information like the size of the model is missing from the article but included on the plan.

It is very easy as a digital subscriber to fell like a second class citizen. When the time comes I don't think that I will stay with digital unless it becomes more than an afterthought.

Hi Chris, my point of view is different to yours, some points to consider:

Digital copy is cheaper, it doesn't make you a 'second class citizen' you're just purchasing a different product.

The absence of free plans from the digital edition has been explained ad nauseam, see above.

I don't receive my digital copy untill a few days after the official publication date, I don't remember it being different, so, because this is what I expect, it isn't a problem.

I'm not privy to the roll out practices of the magazine, but I bet there's a good reason for things being the way they are. I'm perfectly content with that, life's too short for me to be concerned with how they run things.

I could go on, but I'd rather be building a model.

                          Charles.

The lack of plans feature has been explained but nobody has ever explained why the articles are published lacking basic information that would make them much more readable for digital subscribers.

There cannot be a good reason that digital issues are published later than print issues.

I realize that fan boys will forgive anything and everything but the wider market will not. If they are serious about selling digital issues then things need to improve.

                              Going sailing.

Goodness me is it Chris E's time of month again already? Doesn't it come round quickly?

Digital issues are cheaper because there are no printing costs, which includes the plan. You pays your money you takes your choice. If you want the plan buy the magazine, not rocket science is it?

By the way the wider market is fine with it, its just you that isn't.  I'm also sure that if you wanted the plan you would only have to ask on the forum and someone would be happy to send it to you.

Just out of interest how many of the plans have you built?

                                  Hi All,

Yes I second Richard's comments, but as we are both regular contributors to the dear old magazine we are slightly biased. I only mentioned the free plan as it is one of mine this month and the article does say The Cigarette is 26" long in the narrative, I'd say very few of the free plan designs are actually built (10 designs published so far but who's counting?), but they are always food for thought

                                  Regards Ray

as people have said before, Chris E,………

if you don't like it………………don't buy it………simples, but bleeting and whinging about it EVERY SINGLE MONTH is getting just monotinous………please get a life beyond model boats digital.

i'm sure you must enjoy reading, and a hard copy might suit you better, even if you do have to wait a little longer to read it………….

                                    as i said earlier………..

Some of us are happy to have received the February issue by now – hopefully the March one in the next 6 weeks or so…………. digital ones are fine for catching up and browsing any copies missing such as May 2020 – but nothing replaces paper for handiness.

Larry you need to get going on your challenge – all too soon comes a day when you realise that you are never likely to complete all the builds under way let alone the want too's – it does not have to be a calendar year surely ?

Plus you would make Ray happy to see one of his designs built…………

My eldest son has just bought me a subscription for the PAPER copy and as he said, not much more to include the digital version for my 65 birthday. Not that I am even close to being able to retire.

I like the plans (RCME aircraft plans as well, even if I am not going to build them. I tell myself I might but anyway I get much pleasure from simply poring over the plans. One can learn a lot from that without having to build.

In fact I like Ray's The Cigarette so much I am building two identical ones at the same time. One keeps the name The Cigarette and the other is called Beep Beep which is fitted with surface drives and currently for sale in Italy if anyone wants to take a punt – a pretty fast punt that is!

It seems like a certain poster doesn't have much of interest outside of this topic so I don't think I will miss much if I press the ignore button.

The point I was trying to make is we should all be grateful there is still a magazine available. Believe it to be the only remaining English language one .

One has to remember it is a commercially run magazine catering to a very limited market . If you compare the early issues to the current editions the reduction in advertising is horrendous from a commercial point of view . As a retired Management & Forensic Accountant what happened to Traplet I have seen only too often. –  in SA we have currently lost at least four local magazines because of the pandemic – they will never be published again.

So if there are occasional glitches and problems bear in mind the publishers are working with minimal staff – despite that they still managed to sort out my subscription problems as the magazine is no longer available in shops here due to lack of demand – that is thanks to an exodus of people who would be interested……..

Thank goodness too we now have a professional editor striving to do her best for us all.
