      Hi Guys,

i have just read the artical about the Great Eastern in the latest issue May 2012 of Model Boats, I am very interested in getting a video copy of the program COAST featuring the model of Robert Abell and any other info with the idea of building a model my self

The interest lies in the fact that my great, great, grandfather William Harrison was the first Captain Commander of the Great Eastern.

Any help would be greatfully recived.

      regards Brian Harrison Hutchinson.

            Thank you, Paul

            Hello Hutch………Welcome to the Website

The video can be purchased from the BBC

Very early plans are available from the National Maritime Museum, but lack hull sections etc and will cost about £400

I based my model on a previous build of a paddler…….Jeanie Deans by Sandy Thomson

            The plan is still available

By increasing the hull length by about 5 or 6 inches, the hull will be 7'-0" long and will transform itself into the correct scale length of the Great Eastern at a scale of 1 to 100

The hull section will need increasing accordingly by searching the net for the correct full size dimensions and then modifying the model formers

You will need to study the photographs for the rest of the build

Take a look at the main GE thread……"Exciting development"………..at the bottom of this page

            Regards………Bob Abell

                  Hi Bob,

thank you for the quick reply you must stay up late as I am writing this at 8.37 pm South Australian time. The info you have sent me is great I can add this to my colection about the Great Eastern and Cap W Harrison we are coming by ship to the UK in June next year but are staying only for a very short time days not weeks but I hope to buy a kit to bring back home.

Looking at the cost of plans i thought I would go for a Marcle Models card model kit I have emailed Chris to find out if this will be a suitable model for me to build.

I have the skills as I do some very fiddly modelling in N scale 1-160 making card containers, buildings, and brass loco body kits.

                  thanks again

                  regards,

                  B "Hutch"H .Hutchinson.

I would like to see a few photos of your card build, if possible?

                    What scale is it?

                      Hi Bob

I have found a photo of the Great Eastern from thePower House Museum web site Sydney NSW Australia showing the sheave hanging over the stern.

                      cheers,

                        Thanks for that Bob.

very interesting its a pitty my gggrandfather was not in charge when she became a cable layer

as he was drowned in 1860 when his captains gig was swamped in southampton waters.he was very well liked by all, approx 30,00 people payed there last repects he is buried in Liverpool .

I hasve ordered the Schreiber kit from Marcle Models and will start building it next year as this year is a bit busy for me as I am showing my 6 x3 meter N scale model train layout at three more exhibitions

                        having just finished doing one.

So its just model boats next year first my 5.5.ft distroyer that I built ten years ago that's never been in the water and two sail boats that are R/C controlled plus the GE this .should keep me busy.

                        Regards,

                        Hutch

                          Hi Guys,

A friend of mine has a 3Dprinter so I have had the paddle wheels made, the first set were a bit of a trial run they came out OK then I found a photo of engineers model of GE's main engine and wheels from the science Museum, London.this changed the design that came with the card model some what. When I get the wheels lined up straight and glued together I will endeavor to post a photo. Now I can start building the hull,.this will be in balsawood not cardas its going to be a floating, R/C working model! 1060mm long.

                          regards

                          Hutch.

                            Hello Hutch

That's very interesting, especially the 3D printing aspect and especially Great Eastern' paddle wheels too!

It's a pity you are not using the card for the hull, as it will have all the detail printed on?

If you made the hull from the card kit, you could strengthen the structure with balsa and give it several coats of varnish and it would be ok in the water for short sails. My GE was covered with card plates and survived ok for several hours in the water at Hoylake

                            So give it a try?

                            All the best…..Bob

                              Hi Bob

I did not know that you had used card on your model, only as mock ups, yes I will give it a try but I think I will use the extra strength of balsa to build the hull then cover it with the card, it should be OK, but we have a max of 44.7c just the other day here in Adelaide!, .so would the varnish stand the high temp or should I use a clear epoxy ?

Most Tuesdays at the local pond its around 30c/35c when we meet. for a sail.We are a small group of approx 12 guys, with all types of models most with electric power.some sail.

I well remember Micromodels being about 1/3d for a postcard. That was back when the eyes were good enough and the fingers a lot smaller and nimbler.

Regarding card, I recall that most of Hal Harrisons designs called for skinning the hull with recycled cereal packets. With enough paint forming a barrier, pretty much anything works – what you see is the paint, the model is there to make the paint be the right shape.

Hi all The first set of paddle wheels were very hard to put together and would not line up properly so I have had them remade on a professional 3d printer these will be made as one piece.cost 40 pounds $85 Australian that''s

                                        including the cad drawings.

I am picking them up on Saturday carn't wait. I will try to put up a photo when my PC will let me.

                                          Hi Guys,

I have started my version of the SS Great Eastern.

I have used a Marcle Models card kit to use as templates for a ply and balsa model as the card one would not have room for motors and R/C equipment without compromising the strength built in.

So far I have built the main frames and clad part of the bottom from the keel up.installed the paddle wheel drive motor 12 volt geared down to 120RPM , the Prop, prop shaft, and 12 volt motor , rudder ,rudder servo and linkage.

Waiting on a set of pulley' s and drive belt before I can carry on cladding the hull.

Had the paddle wheels re made they are now made in one piece and are delight to behold

pity I can not post a photo for you.but my PC {windows XP} is playing up.
