      Hi Bob,

Thank you for your help, did not know my photos were not jpeg.

The paddle wheels{ Mark 11}, are 85mm x 20mm and are made from ABS plastic in one piece, with a support plastic that's black that is washed away after printing.

The total cost was $20.00 AUD for the cad drawings using the Tinkercad program, and $65.00AUD for the two paddle wheels.

      The mark 1 paddle wheels were made in separate parts spokes, rings, and blades, that I had to glue together but the spokes would not line up, maybe having them done on a $2500.00 AUD hobby 3d printer was not the way to go, or the cad program was not good enough.{ they were for free.so I can not grumble.}

      cheers,

      Hutch.

These 3 D printers fascinate me, one of our local manufacturers (Fisher and paykel) are poping out washing machine parts on them! (I think my one has just printed out dinner…)

              Hi All

              Glad to help.

It was only through a model train club member that got me onto the idea of 3D printing.as there was no way I could build my model SS GE without the paddles being made for me.

Just think of all the little bits you could have made like life- boats, davits, anchors, winches, and ships helm,to name a few.I will leave you to come up with other ideas, you can have different colored plastic too.

              Cheers,

              Hutch.

PS What was the dinner, banger and mash?.

Hutch in Oz has started the planking process

Are you going to use the card kit printouts for hull cladding, Hutch?

You will need a drop keel for ballast, as Paddleboats are unusually unstable!

This is the sort of ballast system, I`ve used on all my paddlers

                  Looks ugly, but works well!

                    Hi Bob,

Thank you for the photo of your GE showing the drop keel, yes I will devise one for my model.

As for using the printed card sides on top of the balsa planking I have not reached that as stage yet,

will let you know, but I will use as much of the card as I can, for the skylights, funnels, and cabins etc

                    Cheers,

                      HI Bob,

Thank you for the drop keel ballast idea, I will be devising one for my GE. The hull looks like it would be a roller in and kind of rough sea.

I will have a look at using the card but I am not at that stage as yet but I will use the card for the fittings on the deck,

like the skylights, cabins, and even the funnels.

                      cheers,

                                Hi Bob,

Thanks for posting my photo,s and thanks for the kind comments.

The 3DPrinter is a professional model approx $8,000 AUD

The table top models can do this type of work but its the Cad program and the operator,s skill that makes it.

The first set of paddle wheels I had made on a $2500 machine did not come out right but I think the operator did not understand how to use the Cad program.plus it was a free down load program to

Things will be slowing down soon as the wife and I are off on the 18th May for a 55day cruise Sydney to Southampton.

We are not staying in the UK .flying home on the 12th July the day we arrive!!

                                Cheers,

                                  Hi Bob,

An addition to my last post.

The 3D Printer used to make the paddle wheels has two nozzles heads one for the white ABS plastic that the wheels are made of, and the other has the support plastic{ black} that is washed away after the 3dprinting process it finished.

I do not know what brand of machine it is but its as big as a home fridge and can make quite large items I think 200mm x 200mm x 200mm square or very close to that size.

                                  .I hope this helps.

                                  Cheers,

                                      Re 3D Printing.

What you have to look for is the thickness of the material laid down on each pass of the nozzle, the thinner the layer the better the finish.less than 0.05 of a mm.

                                      Cheers,

I have not had any time to model as we the wife and I are off on our cruise on This Sunday ,

but I did manage a start on making the masts.

I will have to wait till I get back to fit the 6volt inderpendent "tank" { its from a model toy ]drive for the paddles. I am going to use the rudder control to stop port the paddle when turning to port and the other paddle when turning to starboard to help with the steering.

I will be contactable by email,

                                                    HI Bob guys,

                                                    Since we got back from our 55day cruise Sydney to Southampton only stayed 6 hours in the UK. The wife had to have a op on her foot so I was house mother for three months! so no work on the GE and now have been busy installing DCC decoders in 12 N scale locos for a customer {have to get my pocket money from some were!!}

When I get back to the GE I will be finishing the hull ie sanding and painting it ,then I will install the "tank" drive and radio control system the stern drive is in place all ready ,I hope to have it in the water for testing before the summer is over.

Al the bast for the silly season
