I can't work amongst mess. I don't know about a tidy mind, but when you've umpteen feet of worktop and you find yourself working in the only free area of about a foot square then it's time to put a few things away. I hope your winter isn't as bad as ours was.

I agree with Dave- I always find if I work in a mess my work is a mess. Mind you, these things are all relative! Also, having a quick tidy at the end of a session makes me more inclined to go back- if I know there's stuff all over the place it's easier to put it off. I remember reading a piece years ago where a chap said if he couldn't put an item with it's fellows in a labelled container then – in the bin. Possibly a council of perfection, but a good ideal to work towards.

I have also just started keeping a work log of my latest project, which I also find helps to keep organised and focussed- famous last words.

I, too, am looking forward to seeing the models that come out of this amazing workshop- any plans Dave?

I'm afraid I'm just the opposite, you will find my latest model perched on the top of a pile of detritus literally of it's own making. embarrassed

But then, at work I was firmly in the 'a clean desk is the sign of an empty mind' camp…. I liked to describe my filing system as 'dynamic'. When items got sufficiently old they just disintegrated under the topweight.

I guess we are all different

                Colin

PS, I rely on a single 5 foot fluorescent in my cubbyhole construction space which measures 9×6 feet.

My workshop, although it does look a bit…full.. is usually a bit of kitchen worktop on top of a b&d workmate. It stays clean apart from the item being built. My real usual workshop is the garden, on a nice sunny day. I usually build the bulk of any model in three or four week ends and spend months getting them to work…

It is undoubtably the painting that is the issue to my mind, for a workshop. I hoover and tidy like mad and wait for the dust (whats left) to settle before the brush comes out.

Well to be quite honest. I do try to keep it clean however the space is limited.About 12 feet by 9 feet. I also made a priority list or work log same as Ian. Gives a little sanity to what to complete before starting the next item. I think all modellers minds are way ahead on what to do next.

I also drew up an spread sheet and listed all my equipment. example: where and what is fiited into a specific model. I also did it with my stock. Brass rod, tubing, paint etc. When using some stock i update the sheet and only buy what is needed. When levels drops it turns red to remind me as the closest model shop is more than 50 miles away.

Dave the winter in South Africa is quite different than yours. we tend to get what we call as black frost. this is when no dew can be noticed and the plants freeze turning it so to say black. usually between minus one and six degrees. Do get some snow sometimes. about one inch.

I think Paul's advise seems more acceptable LoL

I had a tidy up in the workshop last year and I am still looking for some new batteries that I put away

some where,I know that it needed it but I wish I could find them, trouble is that the workshop has got

into a right state by me looking for them.

I used to have a nice 8' x 12' shed in my back garden but unfortunatly i split up with my long term girlfriend and had to move out leaving my beloved shed . I was SUMMONED back a couple of weeks later to get my " THINGS " from my old shed only to find that all i had put in , carpets, workl units , work top ,lengths of wood and all sorts of usefull odd's and sod's piled up in a heap ready for a match to be thrown on to it by her uncaring father , boy did he knowhow to rub salt into the wounds !!! .If it wasnt for the swift intervention of my two girls all my model boat magazines would have gone up in smoke !!!!! Am i bitter about this yes and no .I still build my boats but not in a shed ,which was cold and draughty to be honest , but on my living room table in the warm and dry !!!!
