I am currenlty working on a model of the trireme replica “Olympias”. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience with model rowing machines. Details on this project and the various prototypes can be found on the following website:

Wow. looks great. I dont know about the mechanics, but making all those rowers would give me nightmares!!

I have only seen one multi oar rower, and that was featured in the mag a few issues ago. This was more of a freelance model, and I dont think weight was such an issue.

Carbon fibre rod would be the very stuff to use for the rods and linkages.weighs nothing and is incredibly stiff. Kite shops would supply this.

If I was building such a beast I think I would have to have the drum sound effect to keep all those slaves in synch!

Ashley, that reminds me of a cartoon I once saw. It was of a trireme but instead of having a guy sitting near the back beating time on a tomtom it had a rock star with full drum kit and all the trimmings. The crew were all at sixes and sevens sprawled around the boat with oars wrapped around each other and splinters everywhere. I thought it was very funny!

May 2008 issue of MB had Mike Sheppard’s Hiperfetical in it, a  rowing galley that had two of the three oar banks working. Subscribers can see that article in the digital back issue editions or it can be obtained from the Back Issues Dept.
