With this type of motor controller, there is a serious snag!…….I know only too well!

I lost radio contact with my Broom when it was flat out in reverse……And it carried on at full speed………into the bank……Crrrrrrrruuuunch!……Tinkle!… tinkle!…….I wasn`t aware of the problem at the time.

All my paddle boats have this type and is quite a concern!

That`s hitting below the belt……..when a man is down!

Poor Toyota………….The public confidence must be shattered!

Mind you, I`ve had Passats for the last 15 years and have had 3 call backs!

I had my Ford Anglia 105E for 17 years, and NEVER had a callback !

In my early days, with the HMS Jersey island class patrol boat, which was (possibly Anglia) windscreen wiper motor powered, I simply had a 12 v battery and a 6v battery switched  by microswitches off a servo.

12v reverse, neutral. 12v forwards, 18v forwards.  Did me ok.

Now Berengar has it, It only has full reverse and full forwards…and thats WITH a new fangled ESC. I still have loads of boating mag articles about making your own ESC, and I never did. By the time I got back in to it, ESC`s were dead cheap..sorry..affordable.

Berengar is a very strange name……………What`s the story behind the name?

It came from a book of names.. Its not so hard.. we didnt want anything too common, and starting with “A”, and discounting some odd names or “trendy” irish ones or whatever, a short list was drawn up. and so..

I think “imogen” was one of the ones we liked if a girl popped out.or “evelyn” after my Nan.

Speed controllers like this are deemed contrary to the Copenhagen Accord on Global Warming and must be handed in at the nearest police station. They are, however, useful for warming your hands on a cold day.
Seriously, if you have an upmarket 2.4GHZ radio (eg Futaba 6EXA) then you can set the failsafe position of the throttle channel via the Tx program, or on binding the Rx with the Tx (eg Spektrum 5e). With these sets all of the other channels “freeze” on loss of signal. With any other type of set you can obtain an add-on failsafe unit which sits between the Rx and servo. This will move the throttle servo to a predetermined position on loss of signal.

That is indeed, very useful info………..and it returns the throttle servo to neutral?

                      Now, that is magic!……………….Bob

I would confirm what Dave stated in his post . I have the Futaba 2.4Mhz 6EX system and it has many configurable features one of which is the fail safe F/S mode which is used to set the receiver throttle channel (channel 3) to the output you require if radio communication is lost or the on-board receive battery falls below 3.8volts. As a factory set default the transmitter FS is set to to suit the aero modeller and is a fast idle just enough to get your plane home possibly? For us boaters the FS can easily be set so that the throttle command is the same as if the throttle lever was released i.e zero output (although on my transmitter the display reads 52%). Note this is only for channel 3; all other channels behave such that if communication is lost the receiver output remains as it was for the last valid command. So if you have a bow thruster on say channel 4 operating at full power when communication is lost your boat will continue rotating until systems are normal again.

My mate Rob Christisson of Subtech sells  two types of such units for around twenty quid a throw. Here’s the link.

I can’t say what the difference between the two units is.
There are probably a dozen other types around – just hit the Google button and go looking.

By the time you have bought such a Gadget you can buy an ESC, with no problems. Those old style eat Juice, you will get twice the running time with a ESC. Go on, you have deserved it!

The danger of using this type of controller was not realised until after purchase of same

I`ve got seven of these little horrors, still being used, so changing over would work out quite expensive!
