      Hi Guys

Does anyone know of a large Cabin Cruiser by Vic? 'Lorraine' is 54" and local thoughts are that this is still too small for dual OS 46 VX-M's at 7.5cc each. I even asked Dumas about their model 'Dauntless' she is 49 1/2" and could even be a bit on the small size.

I'm not interested in racing the model more that sometimes it looks impressive to have a turn of speed but under control. Looking in the mag we see the boats launched in the BMPRS are just tossed onto the water and sometimes with harrowing results.

Any ideas for a cruiser to take 2 OS 46's would be appreciated.

the larges vic smeed cabin cruiser that I am aware of is "vivacity"which is 54 inches long beam appx 14 inches

on the one I built from his plan I have adjusted the superstructure to my own taste but the hull itself is as designed. this runs a large outrunner brushless with 55mm 3 blade prop and has a good turn of speed when required, but even then ive experienced torque reaction from this set up pushing the hull over under hard acceleration. probably needs trim tabs to correct this .

twin motors would presumably correct this but twin 7.5 cc s I m thinking would be possibly a bit over the top

            Hello Neville

If you fancy a big chunky easy to build model, why not try Paul Thomason's Gentleman's Vintage Cruiser?

The model is 5'-0" long X 16" wide

It's not a Vic Reeves design, but it is the right era

Those engines are thoroughbred racing machines, designed to be run at high speed with tuned exhausts etc. The power output is 2.5BHP at 23,000RPM – EACH! I wouldn't have thought they were suitable for a sedate cabin cruiser, even one as large as that. Load them up with big scale props and they will overheat and ruin the bearings. Run them on smaller racing props and a big model like that will either take off like a racing catamaran or just pootle around slowly while the engines scream and the props cavitate and boil the lake away.

One of my most-used sayings is you wouldn't put a Ferrari F1 engine in a quarry truck, even if it does have the same number of horses.

(Here I will offer the same caveat as Ashley does i.e. just my opinion; ignore it at your leisure.)

I remember a Vivacity with a Jap 34 cc engine, a heavy slow reving lump. That worked on because the model was designed as a quick cruiser. As Dave said you have 2 high reving powerful engines that need an appropriate hull. Why not pick a suitable design and scale it up? You could do worse than have a look at the offshore model racing association, Google omra, they are knowledgeable about this king of set up.

Bob, great typo, Vic Reeves as a model boater😂😁😀

                  Hello Chas

                  Like you say…….A great typo

I meant Vic Smeed obviously…….I think Vic Reeves is a throw back from my Aero days and recall meeting him at Rolls Royce Hucknall

It's strange how memories can surface, I've just remembered Beachcomber in the M B plans. There are no details in the listing but I think it was over 4 feet long and meant to go fast. If it appeals to you I've probably got the article in an old magazine somewhere. Let me know if you want to see it.

                    Chas.

Now hold on there. you old fogies! I have trillions of neurons dedicated to this sort of trivia:-

It's Vic Smeed and Mick Reeves.

Vic Reeves is the stage name of a very funny bloke called Jim Moir who is the partner of another funny bloke called Bob Mortimer. I don't think he makes model boats but I gather he's an exceptionally gifted artist (painter).

Mick Reeves was World Scale RC Model Aircraft Champion twice, with a model of a Fournier powered glider and later a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter.

Jim Reeves (did you see what I did there?) was a C&W singer who was killed when he crashed his Beechcraft Debonair in a violent thunderstorm. I had to listen to one of his CD's during my first MRI scan……. I took "The Best of Thin Lizzie" for the second!

Vic Smeed was simply a modelling genius.

Sorry, Nev – you can have your thread back now, mate.

Whoever that Reeves was, he made very good paint brushes

Hi Jon, how about the kit made by slec of the aerokits police boat? Very similar to Bobby, and a great price.

                                        Hi Everyone,

Many thanks for the replies, They are very much appreciated. I've been (quite rightly) distracted by an unwell family member who is now doing much better. For once not a case of the the dreaded… I'll be sending a PM to all over the course of the day.

One quick comment though is that whilst i had been aware of Vic Smeed and his designs for years, i hadn't fully appreciated until reading old issues of The Model Maker and Model Boats just how prolific he had been…

                                        Best regards,
