good hope castle.jpgI was pleased to see the Union-Castle cargo liner, based on my old ship the Good Hope Castle, on the front cover of the mag. Here are two shots from 40 years ago. One of us bashing through Biscay at 23 1/2 knots, and some of my shipmates in Cape Town at the chief officer's wedding. Left to right: 2nd steward, able seaman, myself (chief radio officer), senior 2nd officer, 2nd radio officer and deck cadet.

I purchased the Special Issue of Model Boats today. I wonder how many will actually build the Union-Castle cargo liner?

Good Hope Castle at Cape Town. I always though the funnel was far too big, and didn't like the idea of having the mast stuck down the funnel either. The wiring from the radars and direction finder were always melting in the heat, and it was a dreadful job to replace them Couldn't do it at sea at the full speed of 23.5 knots because it was too hot to live inside the funnel. Even in port it was stifling hot, and if the wind changed, it blew noxious funnel gasses over the radar platform, and I had to hold my breath and make a dash to get inside the funnel again. Despite this, Good Hope Castle was a great ship and I was very sorry to leave after two happy years. I initially joined in Bilbao, Spain where I stood by for three months towards the end of the one-year repair after she was abandoned at sea and the accommodation gutted by fire.
