Some one is having a big clear out of all sorts of scale ships on eBay. A place called Birchington. There are some really nice models up for grabs.

        Sorry, the 14th is Tuesday!

Instructive boating, Trevor, Peter and myself today.

Swordfish tried with a 3s Lipo (brushed don’t forget) and despite the battery being perched on top itsent quite well. If we considered that the 120g thrust was upped by about a third, then..barring th3 3s is a bit heavier than the2s, this would be the sort of performance we could expect from a 30mm edf.

Trevors Iti racer showed promise, we will leave it at that. The way forward has been defined though, so that’s good.

Weds am for proper boating, 10 ish onwards I am thinking….at long last. Will have Bluebird to test.

unfortunately 4 of the new boats need

lipos so can’t test them all on the same day.

                    Cheers Bob.

Ran Bluebird and Cobb, followed by the Hobbies Hydro..definitely running better on the new extended motor/prop adaptor allowing a pitchier 7×4 prop.

Richards schooner looked great and sIled well in the fairly light breeze.

Trevors Iti racer showing promise, and lastly Noel’s “Devils toothpick” (which I didn’t see) he assures me was running better than it did before.

                    Then we went home!

                      See Cobb Crusader thread.

But basically…Bluebird sounds fantastic, kicks up water at the back just like the real thing and went really well on 2s.

Then it hit a carp and conked out.

Yeah I only had an hour free yesterday but it was good to be at the pond and see everyone again.

The toothpick drained its battery before you got there Ash, but its much more stable if you avoid turning when flat out!

Bluebird was great, really looks the part and has the right sounds and stance on the water. Shame I missed Crusader.

                          Hi all,

Finally sailed my new boat, very pleased as it performed in a most excellent way for a first wetting (although it was dipped in the paddling pool a few times for testing purposes only)

There’s a short video on YouTube under the heading ‘Eleanor Rose at Bushy Park ‘. If your interested.

Will be putting a bit more deck detail on , ships boats, etc. As and when .

Tomorrow boating by bike again. Final throw of the Mintanic dice, with the Santa Rosa top. Looks nice, great feature on the back. White masting looks very clean. New pinstripe tape on and varnished.

Bluebird and Cobb still drying out in their boxes. Will fire them up next week to see what`s what.

                                    Turned out nice after all.

Trevors Iti racer went really well. No mishaps. fast and manouverable on 3s, not dipping props. Good.

Santa Rosa also going well. Bit wobbly in the breeze, this top probably needs a touch more ballast?

A N New man and small boy turned up. The small boy had made a wooden kit boat (sun glow or something?? cant remember) and it appeared tto be their first attempt as boat building.

I looked inside and saw a bright purple finned anodised 3900 Kv motor……….

Needless to say there were….issues with this even on 2s. However we were impressed by the versatile roomy hull which the boys owner said was v cheap. It was a decent size, perhaps 30 inches or so. Flat bottomed but probably this reflected the price

                                    Looking on ebay now. I have a 2700 Kv in-runner spare/

I think this is it. However at £63 on ebay its not quite that cheap. I suppose a lot of boat for your money?? It looked like it was fairly easy to construct, and the photo on the listing shows it could be made into a fairly (oops….almost wrote "Fairey&quot decent attractive simple cabin cruiser.

The manufacturer has posted on Mayhem & there was a build log of the racer – which looks very Fairey – and went together well and was good on the water.

5 Dragons dodging the bigger boats today at Winscar. The wind was gusty and made the water choppy. All good fun though.

I tried my new yellow A+ rigged boat and initially I was quite happy up to the point where C rigged unit passed me maybe a little tuning required 🤔

Trevor has found the boat we saw today on Sussex model centre website. Look for “moon glow” boat kit.

More or less the same price and looks very similar.

Wonder if we will see them again?

K7 and Cobb both fit and well after drying out.

Did some measurements with wattmeter and despite the difference in size (64mm and 50mm) they both take 30A on 3s , and 17 or 20A  respectively on 2s. The 64mm unit feels much more powerful despite the ostensibly similar end thrust manufacturers figure, especially on 2s.

The 50A esc in the Cobb is large and tricky to tuck in, I could do with a smaller 40A one but looks like myfavoured brand, J Perkins doesn’t do a 40 any more.

Walrus takes only 13A on 3s so liberated the 35A esc and changed to a 20A one, giving me a 35A esc spare or use on swordy.

As I have a 50mm edf ordered for the Swordfish, was hoping for slightly less current draw really on 2s. The measurements seem to bear out the fact that as you get smaller so the edf’s become much less efficient.

Still, it will be JOLLY FAST !!

Disappointment, flooding on K7 again, with 3s batt and not having hit any fish.

Will have to rearrange the bits inside and squidgy sealant in the esc sleeve. Hopefully the edf will come out as designed!

As I had two good runs on the 2s it seems that the extra weight is the culprit, or more likely where the extra weight is. The esc won’t come out from under the exhaust duct, either caught up or the receiver lead not long enough I think the esc will have to go in the nose bit and the 3s can be slid further back,,,,?

Walrus not turning…the tab I put at the stern is obviously fighting the air rudder. However, two skippy runs across the pond were much straighter than previous. Will investigate a water rudder extension on the air rudder andperhaps a Skegness fin in the middle of the plane, at the end of the step.

At least flying saucer was ok and defying the few patches of weed.

When I looked in the Moonglow I thought the motor was a 3930 untilI saw kv after the number !

I'm constantly puzzled and dismayed at the mindset that equates power with speed. Unless you're using a very specialised surface-piercing prop in a racing hull – or you're a larikin like Harry – then anything over about 15,000RPM is excessive. Moonglow is a flat-bottomed, all-balsa beginner's model and was originally designed for an ED Sea Otter 3.5cc diesel engine or a Taycol Standard/Supermarine electric motor, running a fully submerged 3-blade prop of around 40-45mm diameter. Neither of these motors would produce anything remotely approaching 29,000RPM (i.e. a 3930kv brushless on 2S).

My favourite analogy is putting a 1000BHP F1 engine in a quarry dumper truck. Unless you fit an extremely high-ratio gearbox then the thing will just stall as soon as you select drive.

I wonder if this motor was bought on-line without any research or sold by a bored model-shop assistant whose understanding of the subject extends only as far as what's written on the box. My greatest fear is that it was recommended by a so-called 'expert' and that this idiot will continue to dispense his nonsense to the detriment of our hobby.
