The Bushy park boaters will be at Kempton Steam Museum this Sunday exhibiting a refreshing range of water borne craft, alo f with several other proper club stands. There will be an engineering model tent, stationery engines and all sorts in attendance.

The BIG Steam engine will be operating, and it’s worth seeing. 1000hp three cylinder 4 story tall lump. Awesome.

I will be bringing stuff hitherto not seen at our past few shows, but will obvs be bringing the bumpers.

Got my magazine yesterday.  Today I decided to read it in a nearby Costa Coffee while I was waiting for my car to be serviced.  Thanks for embarrassing me Ashley when I burst out laughing when I read Minion Monroe!  Where you get these ideas from never fails to amaze.

Great read, brilliant model, who doesn’t love Minions!  Only you could find a jar full of them for a pound.

Not seen Ashley’s article yet, but by coincidence my tiny tug has been crewed by Minions for a while now.

I also nicked Ashley’s cargo idea from a previous build

            Richard. Glad you liked it!

I WAS going to apologise to all the serious boaters out there….
<p style=”text-align: right;”>Unfortunately the pictures do not full describe the boat on the water, with the paddles splashing, the squirting and the singing.</p>
Dave, you can’t beat a good minion. Anyone is more than welcome to steal all my ideas, that’s what the articles are for. The toxic waste “drums” are an instant fun load, but don’t try the disgusting sweets inside…..

A good time was had by all at Kempton yesterday, Sunday. 4 clubs ther ( including the Bushy park bunch). Some action on the temp boating pool. Bumpers as always. Interestingly the kiddies all recognised the Mintanic (as the Titanic, obvs) whenever it was out.

Just read Ashley’s article myself – brilliant. The human bilge pump was a cheeky nice touch, I bet the spectators loved it.

How about posting the missing photos on here?

                    Ashley,

I got the impression from the text that some of your photos had not been featured. If so it would have been much better to include those rather than the excessive duplicates in ‘Reader’s Models’.

…in addition. There was a newbie at the pond! With a sort of Vietnam river patrol boat, made mostly as I gather by his son. 14 yo perhaps.

It exhibited a whole raft of newbie errors, stuff that you wouldn’t think twice about, however it wax a good attempt with no guidance other than the shop he bought stuff from and as such was a very credible attempt.

The steering was not good, but the rate switch was operated on the Planet 2+2 set. Which cuts down the effective stick movement, easily sorted. The battery was flat and this sounded like either customer mis-op or a dodgy charger.

The prop fell.off as it didn’t have a locknut, and there was too.much shaft sticking out the end.

There was no tiny screw holding the servo arm on the servo and the ball joint connectors needed a spot of glue to stop the nuts undoing.

However, with some of this sorted with a spare battery. Dean’s converter and a new prop and locknut, the boat performed a few circuits ok.

Advice was given and hopefully they will have a good run next week. Forgot to take a photo.

Noels carrier is magnificent 🙂 good to have beginners boating , that’s how most of us learned what not to do !!

Nice looking carrier, at 8 foot long it should have quite a presence on the water.  Good job with the youngster, we all started the same way.

The next project I am working on MAY be the subject of a free plan. However it does involve some artistic interpretation and the use of styrofoam. I have alao suggested an alternative power arrangement..choice of motor type etc, which will require some deviation from the plan if chosen

I am wondering whether to ccontinue writing as if it was a plan.

I might be sending the article to various of you chaps in due course to see if you feel that you could attempt the build. Or whether you feel it is too..freehand… or otherwise requires too much interpretation . Not for a while yet!

                                Hi Ash,

You may have noticed in my recent articles I only do an introduction to the design now and caption the build photo’s these days which makes the process very simple,  not the old pages of cut this stick this to this !! as not many are actually built in my experience of 18 designs published so far, good anotation on the drawing is more important these days 🙂

                                Good Luck, Regards Ray

That was the genius of Vic Smeed. His plans spoke for themselves, you needed nothing else. True model maker’s plans.

I would like to give the potential builder an appreciation of the thought process behind what they are doing and not just simply follow the direction coz i said so. Knowing what the end result has to be like for any single stage and why it is being done in that way. The use of foam instead of balsa might potentially put people off but there’s no artistic sculpting involved here, just cutting blocks.

It might be something of an education really, assuming someone wants to build a slightly more unusual type of vessel.

You are right though Ray….how many of these things get built?   Ashley

I have found the scale sailing boats ie Wild Duck & Eventide have had the biggest take up from builders , as no one else is designing them and they are small and pretty simple, good luck with your new design 🙂

I never see any harm in doing a build thread for feed back if your lucky !Lysander sails 231224 my next sailing boat uses a commercial keel so I’m hoping it will be popular !!

That is not necessarily the issue. There are lots of projects in the magazine which I will never build – most of them to be honest. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy reading about them and admiring the work that has gone into them.

None of us can build all the projects we would like to, life is too short, we do what we can but there is always the space for appreciating the efforts of others and often we can learn from the published descriptions to improve our own projects.

If I were bit younger (maybe 15 years!) I would be very tempted by Ray’s sailing vessel designs but I have enough on my plate trying to complete my legacy projects!

What’s annoying is I once saw a good one at a bring-and-buy sale in good condition for not a lot of money. I think it had the plastic vac formed hull (no longer available). Why didn’t I just buy it…

Sunday. Nice and sunny, bit breezy. Car park virtually empty despite or because of father’s day and a musical event at Hampton Court in the evening??

Flying bus going well, but there is a serious imbalance on starting up with the w tail mixer, leading to some serious juggling. I might try changing out the esc’s to see if I can improve it. You can trim out using the rudder channel, but I think this is for fine tuning only. There is a big difference in motor speeds between  (no throttle) full right and full left rudder ( the motors whizz from stationary if you use the rudder)

Terrorfish went ok. But..unbelievably one of the motor brackets on my Devastation had come unstuck and I was unable to use it. Back at Base I scraped off the old stuff (filler, p38 I think) and reapplied some epoxy. The boat is quite old now, and this is the sort of thing that happens.

Three other boaters there..all with no mechanical issues!

Three other boaters there..all with no mechanical issues!

How about their models? I have lots of mechanical issues but my boats still seem to work….

Your comment about motors whizzing from stationary strikes a chord with the recent issues I had with my Greek Fishing Boat (speed controller failure discussed directly with Ashley)

As usual it was more than one thing causing the problem, but when I managed to get the ESC to respond (Viper 15) just moving the throttle stick put the motor straight into full speed. Swapping in the Hobbywing Quickrun unit restored proportional control so it looks like something had failed in the Viper.
