Sad news – another materials supplier closing down

I received an email yesterday from 4D Modelshop, the text of which is below. I don’t know if many of you bought materials from them, I did and it will be a resource that I’ll miss.

It is with deep regret that we announce the closure of our business.

Our final day of trading will be Monday 30th June.

Please note that the New Blades Show will go ahead as planned this Thursday – we’re looking forward to seeing many of you there.

As part of our closing process, we’ll be offering the following discounts to visitors to our shop:

      Wednesday – 20% off
      Thursday – 20% off
      Friday – 30% off
      Saturday – 30% off
      Monday – 40% off

Payment for goods must be made on the day.

Stock is limited, so if there’s something specific you’re after, we recommend visiting us as early as possible.

The website may not be operational up to the 30th & may close as early as Thursday.
(the above discounts do not apply to web orders)

Please note that the closure also includes our Workshop Services.

We want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your support. Serving the creative community over the years has been a true privilege, and we are incredibly grateful to have had you with us on this journey.

      Warmest regards
      4D modelshop

          Hi All,

That is sad news, they were never a Model Shop in hobby terms as ours are, but an Architectural modelling supplies shop, I popped in there frequently when I worked in London in the bad old days 🙂 excellent for materials and figures, I was seen struggling on the tube train with a large sheet of grey Styrofoam, I thought about zooming up there on the train for some bargains ! but as a return ticket from Maidstone to Victoria is £50 maybe I won’t bother . I can only assume they have fallen victim to the 3D printing process with less actual architectural models being hand made 🙁

          Regards  Ray

hi there,, this shop is a very sad loss to me & all of us.   This was one of those shops where you could obtain materials which had become difficult to source.   One item which sticks in my memory is that I wanted a triangle section of plastic 6mm sides and over a meter long.   This shop supplied it for me.

I have been back on line to source some more of that materials but, it looks as though it has all sold out.   But, before the shop closes for good I put an order in today for bits and pieces to add to my stock.

            John

I have browsed 4D Model in the past but never bought anything from them.

I have found EMA Model supplies to be a useful source of materials. Quick turnaround too.

Thanks for the link Colin, has some interesting stuff which may be useful when I start detailing. Was hoping that they might have the metre lengths of plastic triangular section that I use for strakes, but unfortunately not, only 250mm.

Only supplier I did find was Deans and the postage was very expensive.

                    hi there

Just spoke to a lady on the telephone from 4D shop and she informs me that one of the main reasons that the shop is closing has to do with the rates/grounds rents in London.  Also, something to do with BREXIT.

                    Sad loss they are.

It has been a double whammy for small businesses like this. When the lease expires the landlord will often vastly increase renewal costs and since Brexit, many small firms no longer do business in Europe due to the more complex rules and regulations. Likewise, businesses in the EU have stopped supplying the UK due to the need to register for VAT.

On a brighter note, living down here on the Surrey/Sussex border, my usual ‘go to’ physical supplier is Squires of Bognor. Having one Daughter living in nearby Littlehampton and the other inland in Midhurst (near the BBC Repair Shop) it has been possible to do combined trips and fit in a visit to Squires. I had intended to do so this week but Squires is closed all week as they are apparently attending an event in Perth (presumably Scotland rather then Oz)

I have in the past visited Sussex Model Centre in Worthing which is also not too far away but not for a while. So I stopped off there today en route to Littlehampton and was glad I did. I had forgotten just what huge stocks this shop carries and it was like being a kid in a sweetshop! I managed to get several bits and pieces I wanted and the shop has an excellent stock of wood, balsa, obeche, bass, walnut, ply etc. I managed to get out with just under £50 worth of supplies but will definitely be back for more. It is only about a 45 minute drive for me.

                      They do mail order too.
