      Hi Ashley

On battery weights a NIHM 3300 is about 339 grams and 2S 2650mah 30C Lipo is about 139 grams !!!

The Lipo would last longer on full power.

      A 3S  3300mah 60C is about 288 grams, thats 51grams lighter !!!

Yes Harry, can’t beat a Lipo for watt/ weight ratio.

I had to put a Lipo in the boat to test it as the esc (presumably set up for a Lipo and non adjustable) kept dipping out with a Nimh.

It was an aircraft style esc, I might put a quicrun in there as they are set for Nimh but have a Lipo ‘ conversion’ link ( I think).

Great boating Sunday in the sun for once, despite it was still a bit chilly the sun was nice on our backs.

Aircraft carrier HMS Invincible on duty and looking fabulous in the sun on a flat calm pond with really great reflections. I never did an article for this one although a picture of it has been in the mag a couple of times.

Four of us there. Selection of 9 interesting craft. Good crowd.

Painting longtail. Added ball joints to get rid of slop in the turney/up and down bits. Test again Tues morning.

Ah Harry…you do it wind me up!

3 degrees here this morning rising to a balmy 8 later on!

Dropped a lump of lead in the water and had to take coat and jumper off so I could retrieve it from the bottom of the pond

              …brrrr!

                      Ah..got it…car-key!…kahki. subtle Harry, subtle…

Good test of longtail on Tuesday. Settled on a prop, three blade 40mm with a moderate pitch and wide paddle blades, but the freeboard at the sides is too low…OK for normal running but when turning quickly it’s dangerously low and in any case water was being slopped inside generally. Needs an extra panel 15-ish mm tall on both sides, tapering from the point at which the planing step starts underneath about (8 or 9 inches from the bow)and rising to the rear.

Interestingly. A very wicked 2 blade very high pitch surface piercer was tried and although it gave us a rooster tail, I was unable to steer the boat to the left due to the prop torque when on full power even though I could see the tail was hard over.

Going to ve very nice this morning so taking the bumpers to entertain the masses.

As an aside, the left hand pedal on my electric bike seized up, and try ads I might, with heat and penetrative oil, I could not undo it (yes, left hand thread,). So, I used the angle grinder to cut the pedal off so I could get a ring spanner on it, and had to stand on it to loosen…and it took at least 3 rotations before I could do.it by hand. Why was it so tight???? Just corrosion of the alloy arm? New pedal went on easy, with coppaslip, just in case.

Although the pond was OK last Sunday and indeed zruesday, today it was full of crud, and the new stream meant it was just going round and round the corner by the jetty. It was full of big leaves from thecreeds they cut down, and sticks, besides the mucky algae lumps ( which disintegrate to touch but dirty up the boats. It was plainly impossible to boat.

A certain John Wilkinson turned up with a very nice Southampton- IOW ferry, the Vectis but we agreed it wasn’t worth the risk to sail. I saw Trevor on his second lap of the busy car park and said it was mot worth persevering to get a parking spot. After a nice chat. We packed up and I went for a walk around the lakes.

Shame, as had Stingray and the terror fish as well as bumpers/Daleks…

Went through my box of spare motors today to find there were only two 700 size motors to be chucked.  One is unmarked and the other an mfa one, the large motor ( had a name wot I cant remember) that they sold before the 800/850 ones.

I also have a hot 500 in a nice wooden box. It’s a Kyosho colbat-05, with replaceable brushes and adjustable timing. 200W and 14500 rpm to dispose of. Might be collectable?? Its a lump considering the much lighter 1400kv 38mm outrunners develop 160w, and the 2200kv ones 220w……

                              In no particular order

                              7. Speed 280

                              1.  850

                              1. Graupner speed 600 7.2b. And one 12v.

                              4. 555 6-24v

                              1. 550 7.2v

                              3. 540/1

7 small unmarked 140 ish sized can motors

                              1.  M500

                              1. Monoperm

                              6. Speed 400,  1. Speed 480

                              2. 385,  2.  360

                              10 brushless 28mm outrunners. Split 1000, 1400. 2200 kv

                              1 400 sized 2700kv brushless inrunner

                              1. 500 sized 4370kv inrunner

Where did all these come from eh? Speculative purchases mostly, the two high speed inrunners were unsuitable as bought and replaced by something else. These could go as well, never likely to use. More than a few were unsuitable as fitted ( the 360’s are very weedy) and were replaced by other motors, and the speed 400s have been relegated due to the cheapness and small size of the 28mm outrunners.

I bet everyone has a similar box…what’s in yours?

Not got as many spare motors as you..

But still more than I thought.

                                140, 2 x 285, 2 x 918D, 2 x 380, 1 x 360.

You will have to build something that uses multiple motors!

I probably have enough brushed motors for the next 20 conventional boats, and sufficient brushless for a few years…?

Still, I needed “double ended” 28mm brushless motors for the flying bus, and had to buy two to suit despite all the ones in the box,!

…was freeezy cold on Sunday. It was the wind. Lovely in the sun when the wind stopped blowing.

Speaking of which. It was very breezy and Neil’s destroyer was shipping water. Eventually I put the bumpers in due to pond-side interest and they are quite immune to waves and wind…other than messing up Barbies hair do’s.

Next boat will be an aircraft carrier! Looking at about 36 inches long. Exciting…my THIRD aircraft carrier! Also a record breaking boat may be in the offing but that’s in the umm and arr stage

Bright and breezy yesterday Sunday. Parking a nightmare due to a fun run, managed to get a space after three turns round the car park, having been followed by Pete who was similarly lucky.

“Sutcliffe” Valiant and saucer. Sauce slower fight down and I changed batteries but it was still slow. The mtronics esc was hot to the touch which was BAD considering the wattmeter said only 3A current draw. It also only had reverse, and I am wondering if I put it in because it had lost forward and then connected up the motor incorrectly ( it still pumps. Just not as well in the  reverse direction)

I need to buy a few aircraft style forward only esc for it and the Valuant. As they are a much cheaper alternative. Perversely I have loads of spate esc….but all brushless!.

Something not right Ashley, an Mtroniks ESC shouldn’t get hot.  If it has a fault and not working forwards it might be safer to bin it.

No worries Richard…it is in the bin. As you say, shouldn’t get hot on a 3A load.

Replaced it with a quicrun esc. And checked that the impeller goes the right way round in the pump.

Bought some tiny brushed 30mm ducted fan units (they are for 1s or 4v operation) for a specific purpose, and not necessarily to actually propel something…

The 30mm brushless ones can have either a 700 or 14000 Kv motor…on 2s. Jeez!

Sunny but a brisk breeze and a bit nippy until later on, Sunday ( last).

Saucer…worked well, back to it’s warp10 with new esc and correct rotation of the bilge pump. BUT. no lights or death ray? Back at starbase it Looks like the silly mechanic who fixed the warp drive had inadvertently swapped the battery sockets as well….

Tup working well in the chop, and Peter had his hydrogoil out for further testing which threw up a few fixes.

Another very occasional visitor, Neil, turned up with a ‘naturally weathered’ tug ( not cleaned for years!) With a really great diesel sound. Although we thought it looked a bit nose heavy on the water.

Car boot this morning. On the lookout for figures to use as crew etc.
