I have just bought myself a half completed Sirmar TID off ebay. (its for my grandson to play with)

The chap selling it was very helpful and even drove half way to meet me. The model is fantastic and built like the proverbial brick outhouse, I will post photos as we work on it.

The TID is just to pass the time whilst I figure out what the next big build will be, I've gone off the 1st world war ships.

You could have a look at the new CVF carriers….lots of fun building one of them.

The trouble with carriers is they have to be laden with aircraft, or it is not a carrier, and at the moment, every two years we seem to have a change of mind when it comes to aircraft you might like to put on them. Berengar`s HMS Argus has 4x camels on it, plastic ones from a board wargame..and it is the first thing people see and comment on…not the ship, nor the stripes or the hard work….

When I went to the RAF Hendon museum, I saw loads of small die cast sea harriers and they shouted "carrier" to me, so I did. UNFoRTUNATELY I am a bit more practical than some so had to limit the size of the thing to accomodate the dry dock ( HMS Suzuki Ignis).

Hello Ashley and how is your head this morning…that the thing about 'old Bob' subtle yet confusing.

I don't agree that most people comment on the aircraft rather than the ship but if I saw camels on the deck of any model then I would probably comment on how out of place they were.

Aircraft carriers are by their very nature big and the new CVFs will make excellent subjects for large models….perhaps a practical solution would be a slightly bigger 'dry dock' or an extension to the existing facility in the shape of a custom designed trailer.

Forgot to say that the TID came fully loaded with large 12v motor, speed controller, receiver and even an Acoms 2 channel transmitter.

I'm not sure yet Bob, this model is for my grandson to use on the water, its so tough that he won't be able to damage it and so spare my more delicate models. It will be upto him to decide on colours and therefore which example it will be.

The list that you supplied helped with the wartime TID that I built (still in the workshop awaiting a decent sized motor as I can't use IC)

Paul . Camels and i think Cuckoo light bombers were the "strike wing" for the Argus in 1918 ish..

offhand cant remember what it normally carried.

Comments at our pond from the public ALWAYS start with "ooh look at the planes on that ship". Perhaps it is because Bushy is a family sort of park. I would imagine crusty hardened boaters at a pukka club lake would look at everything BUT the aircraft first.

Not that i am suggesting you are crusty of course.

Letting children choose colours for boats…bad news. Berengar`s choices varied from minute to minute for the several things I made for him.!

I started stripping the parts off the kit today some, as can be seen on the 'as is' photos, were in the wrong position.

Took the motor out…its a MFA Marlin [so the tug will have plenty of power] and took out all of the electronics.

A big thanks to Rear Admiral Colin for answering my call for help and for scanning and emailing a piece on this kit from an edition of MB June 1994.

The boat hull and superstructure have been completely stripped and prepped for painting.

I've cut out the blank where the wheelhouse will be fitted and was again surprised at how thick the fiberglass is, in fact there are places on the hull where the thickness exceeds 7mm so I have no worries about damage if the little man runs it into the bank.

So far I am very impressed with the standard and quality of the basic parts that Sirmar produced, its a shame that the company are no longer in business as I would love to try something else.

Thanks for the information Colin I have sent Barry an email and requested details about R.M.A.S. Roysterer that he has listed on his website which at 44in would make a nice model to build.

The renovation is nearly complete and the boat looks quite nice, my grandson liked the cream on the colour scheme from the model used in the MB feature but wanted to have a green hull so we have produced a very 1930s colour scheme.

The next stage is to refit the motor and electrics and take it for a test.

Bob: sorry to say that I could not convince my grandson to pick a specific boat to follow so I can't allocate this model with a production number (but on the plus side it has made the research very easy)
