Having built a few highly detailed and accurate models of south african ships, the latest being the S A Alphen, an ex mv of Safmarine I am now looking for plans of the Clan Ross ex Macinnon Castle. The South African Seafarer was an identical sister ship to the mentioned vessel, built by Greenock shipbuilders in Scotland in the 1950’s. I have a detailed plan of the ship but not the water line diagrams. Is there anyone who could assist me to get a set of these Plans?

At present I have on my workbench a 1/96 scale battleship, The Duke of York which was built by a friend of mine who is now deceased. Our Model Boat club Based In Centurion, Pretoria, South Africa. This huge model fell in very bad disrepair and was infested in dry rot due to a very moist bunker where was being stored. She has been in restoration for the last three years on an on and off basis and now is at quite an advanced stage of restoration. Needless to say I have had to rebuild almost the entire ship again. The other ship I have is the steam tug J R More which is being scratch built on a scale of 1/32. I will be plating this ship hull with aluminium sheeting on which I will imprint the rivit marks. I have made a machine which can print from a single row of rivits to three rows onto the thin sheeting. My aim is make a very detailed hull from which a mould will be made and a fiber glass hull will be used on the final model.

Lastly I have been building a library of ship plans of the South African harbour vessels. Plans will be made available within the near future for model builders who are interested in the older steam powered tugs and other craft. Some of the latest harbour craft will also be available.

            Hi Bernhard.

Do you have photos of the restoration and your rivet marking machine that you could post?
What you are doing sounds very interesting.

            Regards.
            David.

I will be posting pictures of the machines I have built as well as a description of how they work very soon. As far as the restoration of of the Duke Of york goes those will also be posted shortly as I am busy spray painting them up at the moment. I am using DUCO car paint and have used this paint with great success on my other models. The finnish is very realistic giving me a perfect saturn finnish which is not matt or glossy. Spraying the abs plastic sheeting with an etch undercoat and then the finnishing coats I get no chipping or peeling of paint even after many years and much sailing.

                Hi Bernhard!
I’m moving to the Centurion area soon and would like to see some of your models. Where exactly do you meet and when?
By the way, wasn’t the SA Seafarer the one that landed up on the rocks at Sea Point, way back in 1966? I came to South Africa in October of that year, aboard the Union-Castle liner ‘Capetown Castle’ and it was still a conversation point in CT at that time, as I recall.
                Best wishes, Glyn

                  Hi
Yes Seafarer did run aground not sure of the date though. I was resident in Cape town at the time.
