      Hi everyone,
I have a Graupner V35 ESC which I am preparing to install in a boat and the instructions require me to connect a Schottky diode across the motor terminals- the diode is supplied. I know there was some mention of this type of diode with regard to parallel battery packs recently but my question is- what is the purpose of this diode in this position and what might be the consequence of not using it? I have never had to do this with other types of ESC so I’m confused.
Perhaps someone who has experience of these types of ESC could help.

The purpose of the diode is well documented on the internet.Search flyback diode

There will be no great difference in omitting a Schottky diode as the v35 has a brake and therefore it already has a standard diode in situ.A diode with the current rating of three amp and voltage rating of a few volts above the battery will be fine. The cathode, marked by a band, is goes to the motor positive. An image search turned up photo 1. in this

            Hi,
Thanks for those links. I think I understand the purpose of the diode now. It seems to me that it would be best to include it even though there is a diode in the V35  just to be safe.
I wasn’t aware of this phenomenon of reverse voltage during the off phase of ESC’s and the need to protect circuitry with a diode- something else learnt.
            Thanks for your help.
