Have just read the build log in the latest copy of Model Boats and I am astounded at the sheer cost of the kit, the seemingly endless list of Extras that are needed to finish it. Then there are the issues of misleading and incomplete instructions, lower quality fittings than those listed, etc etc.
Strange , I am sure that if this was a British Kit it would have had critical reviews and comments, but as it is “Made in Germany” it must be good and all mistakes and failings must be passed over quickly. A bit like German cars I suppose? Is it just me that feels this?

Well, at least the review made all these things clear! The general idea is to ‘tell it like it is’ so that people can make up their own minds whether to buy or not. Some modellers can accommodate faults and shortcomings more readily than beginners so what might be a problem for some isn’t so important to others.

Personally I don’t think the big continental manufacturers are any better that the UK ones. Both have strengths and shortcomings and I’m afraid that in this area few are absolutely perfect.

Sometimes you find that a kit goes together like a dream, other times it can be an uphill task – and that can frequently happen within one manufacturer’s range!

I suppose the only real solution is scratchbuilding – then any errors are down to the builder!

In my limited experience the best kits I have come across are from Model Slipway. At present I am coming to the end of building the Billings St Canute plank on frame kit. Makes a nice model with very good brass fittings but quality of wood for hull planking could have been better and as for building instructions I think I would summarise those as “open box and build model”! Absolutely minimal which is OK for experienced modellers but others would struggle. Drawing of model good but some details not shown at all. Could have done with a CD with comprehensive views of the model.

I'm just in the middle of building my Atlantis, my experience to date. Boat 1, resored a fairwind bought of eBay, boat 2 True Blue kit then a couple of micro magics. So I think I rank on the bigginer scale. Price wise of the kit I can't complain, £205 off eBay, it's an unstated kit I guess around 12 years old. I have already replaced the rigging/deck eyes for more realistic fittings but the rest of the fitting seam ok. Plans wise, I've just used them more as guide lines. And glad I did. Some of the build would have been a lot harder if done in the order the plans suggested. My big bit of advice for anyone thinking of building this yacht. Leave the keel weight out till the last possable moment, putting in just befor you rig here up.

I finished the Atlantis last year, Im very pleased with her, yes shes expensive and a model not made for the squemish but shes a real eye opener when out on the open water.

A few tetthing problems, I fitted the genoa sail as a retron fit which is best avoided and not worth the money.

Still havn't got it working properly either.

Heres a link to the photos I took
