I think this one must now rank amongst my greatest failures. Next to the bottom in popularity stakes here and, although it was a private commission, and completed 22nd November, 2010, it is still here, having heard nothing more from the person who ordered it!

Never mind – I have grown to like it very much and would now be sorry to see it go!

It’s a fine model Bob but I suspect that many people are not familiar with the period and unaware of the history of the ship so it doesn’t ‘resonate’ with them.

Go on, treat yourself and hang onto it.!

I spoke too soon! The buyer e-mailed me tonight advising collection date.

Really, I don’t think many big powered merchant ships “resonate” with model builders.

Just as well, because if everyone was making them, I would probably loose interest. I enjoy being “off the beaten track” as far as model ship subjects are concerned!

At the moment Bob, I think you have cornered the market, such as it is!

I saw some ship models in the Lucerne Transport Museum a few years back to a similar scale to yours but not to the same high quality. Nevertheless I remember thinking ‘I could do that’. However, at the moment I still like making working models but maybe in the future…..

The demand for miniature Merchant ship models is actually quite large and I really could not cope with it as a business.

My greatest and most annoying problem is lack of communication. I always answer e-mails and letters immediately, but I seldom get any acknowledgement and very rarely know where I stand and this discourages me from accepting private commissions anyway.

Another problem is that people looking at the models with the pen alongside, decide that as they are so small, they will not cost very much and are often horrified at the thought of paying a few hundred pounds. However, the miniatures of Donald McNarry and Lloyd McCafferey normally sell for thousands and thousands of pounds each and they are the same size as mine. Both are infinitely superior to mine and are really superb, but I do not have their patience or decication to approach their quality, although I try to improve on each one. As far as I know McCaffery has never built a powered vessel and specialises in sail. McNarry build all types, but he died recently at the age of about 89.
