Hi guys,

 

Second post as a new member. While still looking for a nice kit to built, I came across this on eBay. I have additional pictures but not sure how to post them so I added them as an album.

Anyone heard of it? Size is 75x25x20cm. I was thinking working on it (full wooden deck, paint, accessories, RC parts).

 

It's a bit pricy so I am trying to negotiate.

Any thoughts?

Looks OK and if the brushless motor is included would give the boat a good turn of speed.

It's always a gamble buying from eBay.

Sorry to disappoint you, Harry, but that's a Robbe Navy Kompact brushed 600 motor with integral gearbox. I mention this only to help Matthieu chose the correct type of speed controller i.e. one suitable for brushed motors. One rated at 15-20A would be ideal.

Never heard of such motor, will check it out. If needed I might change it for a brushless one of similar power so the boys can play for more than a few minutes, everything seems dated and if they are in the same shape as the boat…

I need to see how it behaves as well. Similar boats but 1:1 usually have twin engines, and single one in the keel/V of the hull might have an unusual behavior (I am a boater in real life too).

The Navy Kompact was discontinued when Robbe went bust several years ago, so there's no current stuff about the motor on the Internet. As it's a geared unit then the current drain is considerably less than a direct drive 600 and although it won't be as fast as the things Harry the Larrikin operates it'll be quite lively enough for "the boys" and should run for half an hour or more on one charge.
I wouldn't worry too much about the behaviour of single-screw launches. All my models of Fairey power boats are single-screw and all behave impeccably. You may experience a bit of torque roll if the model has a coarse-pitch single screw; if that happens then change the prop for a finer pitch or use a three-bladed prop.

Indeed I try looking for it and couldn't find much. A few guys talking about switching to brushless.

I was planning to have a three-bladed prop no matter what to avoid the torque effect. Will also check its balance to see if I need to weight it in the keel. Is there a way to know the gear ration on the motor? I will try first without changing anything. What kind of battery should I use?

Question, what's the best way to remove the existing paint? Or should I just "cover" it? Traveling often to South East Asia I am planning to measure what needs to be in teak and add it (table, flooring,etc.)

I don't know if others were available but the usual gear ratio was 3.3:1.
I'd start with a 7.2v NiMH or 7.4v LiPo battery pack. A pack of at least 3000maH capacity would be advisable.
Without knowing what the original paint was it's difficult to recommend the best way of removing it. A thorough rub down with abrasive paper works on most surfaces but if it's ABS then you run the risk of scratching it to the point where you can't smooth it off again. Also be careful if using chemical strippers on a plastic hull.
Beware when buying teak – it's banned from being imported into most EU countries because of illegal logging activities in its main source countries. Check with the French Douane first!

Hmmm ok, not sure if it is an ABS hull or something else. I will first see how is the hull state. I guess that's the bad news, the rest being easy.

For the battery I will go with LiPo, that's what I have for my car (same, reworked from 1994…).

For teak, it will be very tiny pieces that will be in my luggage so should be fine. Some decking, maybe a table foe flying bridge.

The border officers never stopped me and I travel a lot… Let's hope it continues!

Thanks for all your advice! One more question, can I get the magazine "online" digitalized (official one of course) as I don't live in the UK?

Finally on holidays and having some times on working on (too many) projects. One is the boat I mentioned before. I just opened the box I received from ebay and I do have some questions…

 

– As Dave said the engine is a Robbe Navy Kompakt (ref 4106). It does look old but as long as it works… My issue is the gearbox. Have a look at all the pictures I added in my album (still having issues adding them in here directly). It seems "empty" Never dealt with that kind of setup before. Tried to manually "plug" it but ain't successful. Any advice or comment that could help. If I keep this engine, any idea for the ESC? You mentioned 20A before.

– Another issue is, while the hull seems water tight, the superstructure is damaged in a few places. I tried basic Tamiya cement, doesn't seem to work (or not strong enough tho). Any clue on how to fix some cracks?

– The rudder. Hole is there but the existing rudder doesn't fit in it. No clue what the previous owner did but he was clueless. I will change it (and it looks ugly, red plastic piece). Would need to make sure it's water tight tho. Any recommendation for the servo?

– Paint and the rest will be easy, Someone some aesthetic part of the boat is in real wood (but what kind I am not sure…).

Anyway… bigger project that expected but that should be fine, the ESC of the Tamiya car for the kid just went in flame so will focus on the boat till other parts arrive..

O the perils of buying a boat off an auction site!
The gearbox is certainly missing its main gear and output shaft and is unusable in its present state. The unit is out of production so you'll be very lucky to find any spares or a new replacement. Perhaps someone has a dead one lying around which he/she might let you have to cannibalize. Failing that you could consider using the motor on a direct drive, but you'll need to remove the pinion gear first and then contrive a new mount and coupling. I'd recommend a 3-blade 32-35mm prop with the motor running on 7.2v and a 20-30A speed controller.
I'm afraid that I have very little experience of ABS. I had a Graupner Parat which had an ABS hull and for which I used Stabilit Express to fix the wooden frames. I think MEK might be a suitable solvent adhesive but there must be folk out there who know the best stuff to use.
This would be a suitable rudder for the model, and a standard servo like a Hitec 311 or Futaba 3003 would be fine. **LINK**

I have built a couple of Graupner models that used ABS for the hull and almost everything else.

I used Plastic Weld, which is Methylene Chloride, and Pipe Adhesive, the stuff used for drainpipes and sink pipes etc. The Graupner ABS was also very smooth and shiny so I would abrade the joints first. 

Plastic Weld is best applied with a small brush, the pipe adhesive came in a large tube with a nojzzle.

I had a ABS hull boat with a 540 brush motor and gearbox.

I removed the motor and gearbox and installed and 35mm brushless motor (1100kv) straight drive.

Ran the same prop on a 2S Lipo battery, then up it to 3S a month later.

The increase in performance was great, also the boat ran longer.

Thanks guys. I need to remove the broken gearbox, it's well glued so will find a way.

I am smoothing the hull and repainting it. Will try your fixes for the ABS.

Engine wise, I don't know yet if I will go with brush or brushless. I wanna keep some ballas
