After completing the tiny LOCHRANZA CASTLE, I found myself recovered to some extent from the long and tedious construction of the passenger liner CARMANIA (1905) and embarked on a model of the four-masted iron barque PRIMROSE HILL at 32’=1″

Took LOCHRANZA CASTLE to the North West Model Shipwrights club yesterday, Saturday 8th January, but very little interest!

Not to worry, I am now sold out again with nothing left apart from the part-completed PRIMROSE HILL.

I suppose I am fortunate in preferring to build the type of model that collectors want, but most ship modellers steer clear of!

The PRIMROSE HILL is to be depicted labouring through heavy seas under shortened sail.

I have now completed the hull and am about to start on the tedious task of masting and rigging

          Hi Bob,

I’ve not long registered and have found your models amazing. I’ve mainly been building RC boats and static canoes normally around the 1″ to 1′ .

You’ve inspired me to start a scratch build of my own. But as usual it will have to wait until the current projects are done.

A few years ago my Dad completed a kit for his cousin of the Joe Lane, a US coastguard cutter from the 1890’s I recently rescued the plans they say 1/8th to 1′ real boat was 108′ waterline model 11″

I may be posting for help and advise when I start

            Hi John
Thanks for reply. The scale I normally use is 32’=1″ and the hull of PRIMROSE HILL is 9.5 inches long on the waterline. I have not had any experience of building at 8’=1″ for many years. The JOE LANE would only be about 3.4 inches long at my scale.

I have not followed up with any building progress of PRIMROSE HILL here, as it seems to be “rock bottom” in the interest stakes! It is almost finished now and here is a picture of the progress as of last night.  Since then, I have fitted three more square sails and two more yards with furled sails. I have seven more yards with furled sails yet to fit. Click on picture to enlarge it.

            Best wishes
            Bob

That`s a beautiful model, Bob……..and even more impressive, close up!

How do you make the shrouds?

                Thanks,
All the rigging is fine copper wire. The ratlines are soldered across the shrouds. The rest of the wire rigging is just glued on. The masts and spars are all metal as well. No knots anywhere.

Beautiful model Bob, I like the way you have displayed the barque pressing on with shortened sail in a lively following sea. Stil can’t get over how you produce these amazing models in such short time.
