Potato Locker

I am making the potato locker for my Fishery Cruiser. Basically it is a rectangular box on the upper deck about 3ft high, 4 ft long and a foot or so wide. The ends and top are solid and the sides are wire mesh for ventilation. However no means of extracting the spuds is shown unless you push them through the mesh to make chips!

Does anyone know whether these things are top opening or is there supposed to be a vertical door in the mesh sides or ends? I have tried Google but can't find any images. They used to be very common on both warships and merchantmen.

How do you get at the spuds?

All the ones I sailed with just had a normal door in them like a garden shed! They were made of slatted wood, as you say! That was in very old ships, more modern ones kept them in storerooms down below somewhere.

Thanks Bob, I will put a door in the ends I think as the sides are specified as wire mesh.

Hi Colin, All the R.N.ships I served on had a wire mesh spud locker and a wire mesh door,

Thanks Andy, I think this one had wooden ends so I have suggested a door there.
