Paddle Power!!

Hello All

With some spare wood and ply lying around I am having a go at a paddle powered Springer.

Haven't a clue why or how!!

Question:

I have a Turnigy D3542/5 1250KV Brushless Outrunner Motor still in its box and need to drop the RPM to around 200 to 300 RPM me thinks. Anybody got any ideas on the best way to achieve that considering I only have 18" by 8" hull size.

Cheap isn't a priority but it would help.

All assistance (and abuse) gratefully received.

I've just had a brilliant idea! Why not sell me that motor and then buy something a little more 'appropriate'? After all, you'll have a job finding a gearbox of 50:1 or higher which will take that amount of power and fit in a springer hull. And then there's the little matter of driving two paddles…

I'd suggest looking at MFA's range of geared 540/1 brushed motors here MFA Geared Motors

Look at the second link from the top of the list and the table of shaft speeds.

That depends on the supply voltage, John. On 12v that looks the kiddy BUT you have to take into acount the space available for a 12v battery. I've replied to your PM.

I know Dave doesn't like SLA batterieson principle but this seems one instance when it could be a cheap and cheerful solution

Check out Ivor Bittle’s paper on building model paddlewheels: **LINK** You want paddles to spin at 150-200rpm, with only 5 or 6 paddles per wheel.

I am working on a paddler project- I found a lot of useful parts on robotics supply sites- places like ServoCity or RobotShop.

Many thanks for that. Loads of information that will help hugely.

I am going to try 2 motors initially, one for each paddle. That is when I have built or sourced the paddles.

I will get reading and see how it goes.
