I am a retired Shipwright by trade and spent many years in my younger days both as an Shipwright apprentice and Trademan restoring and repairing Thames sailing Barges at pin mill and Harwich in essex, My never ending love of Barges lives on and my retirement promise to myself is to build a Thames Barge both Radio control and power assisted, I once crewed a barge from Harwich to St Catherines dock London, I was the boy part of the crew and will never forget the experience, Does any one out there share my interest, before these magnificent boats disappear lets build some replicas.

          Hello AJ

For some reason, there`s seems to be a lack of interest in Thames barges on this forum, which is surprising really, as I find them fascinating craft.

The picture shows my Lady Daphne, scaled up from the Harold Underhill plans, to 48″ hull length and has a built in motor drive

The Association of Model Barge Owners make and race them in locations from Malden in Essex to Lewes in Sussex.

Above is James Piper that I made at 1/24th scale.

It seems to me there isn’t much interest in scale sail in general. Is it becaues its difficult to find a good place to sail. My local clubs pond is surounded by trees and rushes, ok if you have power to get out of trouble.
