Newbie What to get for out of the box boat

Hello,

 

I am fairly new to radio controlled boats. I am not interested in the build your own model boat etc. I would however like some advice on what to look for in regards to a good boat which i can buy and just put it on a lake and play with it. There is a model club near me that play with their boats on the lake so i guess i need something that wont interfere with other craft signals etc.

A lot of pot luck involved, both from the point of view of what kind of boat you want to play with and how much you are prepared to spend on it. Fully RTS boats are almost invariably built and equipped down to fit a price, very few get past the profile. Usually, it is the radio where the main economies have landed. A great many of those carrying optimistic artwork fall into the "use once only" category, especially if the chosen lake is salt water.

You could visit a model boat show with a bring n buy stall, but that generally needs a lot of luck to get a complete working outfit that doesn't need some work.

If you have a club near you, talk to the modellers. You will find that they are an approachable bunch. Find one who runs a boat you like and talk to him about it.

You will probably find, as indicated above, that very few use a completely unmodified RTS boat, since commercial pressures always bring some limitations. Modellers often change the battery, to get better duration, then the radio to obtain better control, and finally the motor to get more speed…

You will probably find someone in the club who has a model for sale. The chances are that you will get a much better boat, with better equipment and for less money than a RTR boat. I wouldn't advise buying from eBay or similar, because an inexperienced buyer can end up with problems.
