Andy – I've used a small 1.5V-3V motor, albeit the MFA version (the RE140 – similar, I would expect – see **LINK**) to run a small Keil Kraft 'Neptune' boat – driving a small (can't remember exactly, but around 20mm) 2-blade prop, the turn of speed wasn't great (especially in flowing water). The U-boat will require something more substantial, I think – more torque – maybe a 380/385 size with similar rev/min (Howes Models stock these). Can't comment on the other motor with the details provided – any photos/numbers?

Armando many thanks for the reply , ashley has recomended 280 motors which i think i will go with and see if i cn get them next tuesday when i get paid .,I think Ashley recomended Maplins and they seemed a good price so with a mix of the plans from hms unseen .The other motor vis 30mm in length by 20mm dia ,Theres no markings on the motor and i have a feeling that it might also be an expo motor but i am a bit of a magpie and will keep my eyes open for anything i can take apart to remove motors from , ie old cassete players, portable cd players , old video recorders great source of cogs as well !!

This is the trouble with hoarding odd things especially motors….is that you dont know what spec they are. I have a few odd small motors and odds are I will never use them!!

I always advocate overpowering model boats, on the basis that if you dont have enough power for emergencies, you can be severely stuffed (swans chasing geese for instance, dont look for models when landing). There is no such thing as overpowering a model, its what speed controllers are for.

For a sub, more power definately. In the can size for 200 series motors there are a good assortment, from bog standard MFA 280, to Graupner speed 280 race ones, or JUST stightly larger their speed 300. Mostly Iike to ensure I can swap motors easily in my boats and so am able to fit different types according to trials or later considerations (changing battery types or voltages),

Insanely, I fitted a Graupner 7.2V Speed 400 in my footy tug, 'Wee Morag' (below), driving a 30mm 3-blader from a 6V pack. Stupid choice – too powerful/high-revving for that type of hull and the ESC had to work overtime. I changed it for one of the cheapo low-revving Howes Models 380 motors and it now runs properly. For my recent footy fishing boat 'Ailsa', I fitted a motor scavenged from a video recorder – rated at 24V, and running at only 7.2V, this draws very little current and gives scale speed at full throttle.

Sorry – that link broke, but Wee Morag and Ailsa can be seen in my Albums.

Armundo. yes, thats a bit TOO much power….. small boats will of course react to too much power more spectacularly than larger models (in moderation).

Hi, Andy a large motor is less trouble i have a Mabuchi 540 in my SS Unity it is geared 2 to 1 and runs for ages on two sub cs in parralel the weight of the motor gives perfect ballast and a spot on scale speed.
