Paul suggested a 1/32 Rodney at 22 feet long.

At the sea cadet hall where my band rehearses, there are a number of fine ship models, as one might expect. In a large cabinet there is a Leander frigate. I have not measured it but it is surely just under six feet.

A Flower corvette, at 2 metres and a larger scale would be quite something..the Leander is quite a large ship (if one imagined it floating on the pond), but would probably only look half as big as a Flower, due to the scale difference.

THEN I paced out approx 22 feet (ish) and we looked at this length.. It is very long, and side-by-side with the frigate model…. looked even bigger. A canoe would not do, it would take a rowing boat to use as a hull. The stiffness you would have to build in..be like building a full size boat.

        Scrub that idea I think.

Any ideas whether rechargable drill motors (14v and 18v) would be any good as I have a couple saved ?

One is a Jin Ding JD 550 14.4v with 3 poles, built in fan cooling and plastic end cap.
It has a 9 tooth pinion on the shaft.
              No other markings.

I wonder how many of these cheap drill motors are rated for continuous running? I bet the brushes and bearings aren't up to much as they usually only work in short bursts with long rests in between.
Just a thought (aka spanner in the works!).

Probably not for continuous full speed but may be OK for gentle cruising and the odd quick sprint across the pond.
Will be ordering a geared MFA 850 soon.

I have several motors in the box rescued from drills and so on. Some of them look very adequate, but I know that I shall never use them really. I should chuck them , but there again….?

Sensibility wins through. No trouble with a geared 850. Lots of reliable power and more than enough torque to push your hull through the unforgiving sea and swamp a few landing craft.

I should think you stand a good chance of winning the tug`o`war comp.

By contrast I an sticking my neck out with the 5 foot LCT4 and will be using using..wait for it.. 3x 385`s, on 12v and 40mm cheap props. I have been very amazed at the performance with the 30 inch LST1, on 9.6v and two 385 motors, and think that as mine will be a no-draught design they should be ok. LCTs were not renowned for going very fast. Your boat of course is a very different kettle of fish and a 385 may be a bit inadequate!

Have ordered a geared MFA 850.

The cordless drill motor still has the forward / reverse switch and variable speed trigger attached so they may get used somewhere, probably with a water ballast tank pump for filling and emptying whilst still afloat to save picking up a heavy hull.

I am using an old motor from a golf trolley in my latest project. They have bags of torque and usually peak out at around 5000 rpm.

Also have a good range on a single 18amph battery.

                        !!
