Motor & ESC

I would like to buy a small brushless motor (1500 revs per volt minimum) plus appropriate ESC to propel a Riviera speed boat, with any suggestions considered and very welcome.

Those who took an interest in my dispute with Customs & Excise (UKBA) at the beginning of August might like an update. I have still not received a refund and have only just heard from the Agency following my M.P.'s intervention. A letter dated 26th September, containing the usual civil service waffle, has confirmed a refund of £134.11 but I could still wait up to 30 days to receive it! No doubt had I owed the money action would have occurred somewhat quicker!

No apology for the error as one might expect from an agency with such an appalling reputation!

PH. Mtronics do a matched brushless motor and ESC but after that you are on yer own with motor selection.There is not a “body” of knowledge regarding b/l motors out there yet of model boats. Racing types use them but as for more ordinary craft?? Ashley

Information is a bit basic, but the information in here **LINK** might be useful. Look for the boat fittings section, find a recommend for your size, should be a good starting point.

Thanks for the tips. In view of the replies perhaps I'll settle for a brushed motor instead if there are any recommendations. It will save me buying another ESC unless it should be watercooled but what advantage there is over cooling the motor I don't know so perhaps someone will tell me please.

PH. watercooling will only be required if large currents are being handled and the ESC and motor are/will get hot.

What size is your boat? and how fast do you want it to go?

Is there any natural ventilation through the boat, as this can make a big difference to the cool running of even a modestly powerful motor.

Size of boat is approximately – length 31" beam 10" at widest point and 5" high. There is little if any through air flow but a reasonable amount of internal space. A previous owner had installed a water cooled ESC and modified a large motor (i.e. physical size) for cooling. The ESC went up in smoke when tested by a local dealer and was disposed of. There is nothing on the removed motor to indicate its make or power rating and I can but presume it did get hot and required a cooling system. My thinking is to fit a small, lighter motor supplying a realistic scale speed. This is not a racing boat as such, merely a pleasure craft. I hope this info helps. P.H.

This would be a useful motor to try on 7.2v or 8.4v with something like a X35mm racing prop. **LINK** Water-cooling coils and scoop/outlet sets are available from a few mail order suppliers. The relatively low current drain would mean that a water-cooled ESC is unlikely to be needed.
Totally unsurprised at the length of time before you will get your refund. In fact I'm amazed they bothered replying – even to your MP. The Department is a complete shambles from top to bottom., having gone from Customs and Excise to Border Agency via HMRC in no time flat. Smugglers and counterfeiters fill yer boots!

Now back from a short break away I've had a look at the website Dave and think the motor mentioned could well be suitable so will probably get one.

I have finally received my refund without any apology or even admission of the department's error.

That would have been too much to expect I suppose but at least the matter is concluded.

Hi,

I have a Blue Bird Technology 12mm KV900 (BLDC outrunner) fitted to a near complete model of Miss Great Britain III (from a Model Boats plan!). I assume the 12mm is the diameter of the armature? Unfortunately the Mtroniks Hydra 15 ESC I was given with it was not working correctly (they tried reprogramming it for me, but beyond repair).

Much as the Mtroniks units seem to be the 'top of the tree', I'd be happy with a cheap and cheerfful ESC, can anyone suggest a unit to suit this motor?

Is there anyone out there familiar with an old sound unit marked SOUND MASTER TRIPLE EXPANSION STEAM ENGINE – RC MODEL WORKSHOP.COM? This was removed from an acquired boat and known to be working but I'd like a few details about it. It has four pin connectors, a fan already attached and appears to have been designed to accept further accessories.Unlike modern equivalents it does not operate from a direct DC supply ( neither 6v nor 12v) and possibly does so only when connected to a running motor. A receiver ribbon, two wires for connection to the loudspeaker and two for the power supply are attached to the item. Any information about this will be very helpful. I understand the producer of this left the scene some time ago so I am reliant on a user somewhere to update me on the product. Thanks.
