The following message has been received from Jackie at Model Slipway:

Someone in our area is using our old telephone number (01226 770008), pretending to be Model Slipway in order to obtain cash for boat kits which they cannot supply. I shall be grateful if you would update our phone number on your records and perhaps tell your club members not to send CASH to someone using our old phone number. The telephone number we have been using since 2010 is: 01226 715576 (this is an answerphone. We are semi-retired and work from home).

      Many thanks Regards Jackie

          This is bizarre.

How is the con advertised? Someone has put this "sales" misinformation into the public domain – where and how?
If the phone number used to be the Slipway factory (which is the case) then it should have been cancelled when Lawrie and Jackie left there (the Whites would not pay rent for an unused number). Was it?
If the number wasn't cancelled then where is it currently connected? Is it still the phone number for that factory unit? Who is the new tenant? He/she may have some explaining to do.
If it's being diverted to another number then who is in control of that call diversion and owns the other number? The most obvious question is where are these poor saps being told to send their cash? The trail leads there.

If Jackie has definite information that this fraud is going on i.e. a statement from someone who has been duped, then it's a matter for the police. It's unfortunate that people don't think to check before parting with their money, especially if payment in cash is demanded. It's not always to avoid the taxman.

From a quick Google search the old Model Slipway number does appear to be in use but by a DIY shop. However the same search also threw up a lot of model boat club websites giving the old number for Model Slipway – presumably because the folk that maintain the club websites don't do as much up-dating of the information on the sites as they should.

Before any one shouts too loudly about fraud there needs to more investigation, the explanation could be quite innocent and simply a case misinformation being out there by neglect rather than deliberate evil intent.

The number has indeed been reallocated to a recently opened DiY store and it appears that somebody there is passing themselves off as Model Slipway. Jackie & Lawrie will be paying them a visit!

I've spoken to Jackie and there is apparently some skulduggery afoot, albeit of a minor nature i.e. some b****r is chancing his arm and, so far as we know, has got nowhere yet. I understand that a quiet word in someone's ear will be the next step. Your assumption ref old website references is quite correct, by the way.

Perhaps Lawrie could take along one of his power tools for cutting things into very small pieces…

A quiet word in the miscreants ear always worked well for me

Only if money has changed hands and the police can prove that there was intent to defraud. I've seen far more clear-cut cases of fraud thrown out at this stage, Bob.
The quiet word may well stop it in its tracks, which would be the best outcome for all concerned.

Hi All Well I think the best thing has been done .I do not know how many people read these posts so I assume the will talk to others ,soon it becomes public knowledge. I will pass on the details to about 12 boaters I know. Otherwise as Dave says leave it to the police
