Hi,

What is the best lubrication for prop shafts?

I’ve gone lo tech with brass prop tubes and brass prop shafts. Both ends are below the water line.

By the way Neil, I’m a little bit sad because the days are now getting shorter! At least it’s Xmas!!!!!!

Ask ten modellers this question and you’ll get 11 different answers!

My own preference is Waxoyl. I have a jar full which I was given in 312BC and will probably last me out. Avoid ordinary greases as they will get more viscous in cold weather and create too much drag on the shaft.

I’ve also used molibdenum grease sold for model car bearings.

Suit yourself – there’s dozens of other options.

I use Vaseline( petroleum jelly) mixed with graphite powder, and even on short tubes, never get any water ingress, plus the graphite acts as an extra bearing.

I am now just about to get Matilda on the water, and I think I’ve found a source of Graphite powder. ( I’ts not easy to find these days!)

Can you give me an idea of graphite to Vaseline ratio?
