Hi, I’m sorting out Matilda’s electrics.

I intend to run 2 motors, 2  ESC’s, 2 Battery packs.

Obviously I need to power the reciever, but that will drain one of the battey packs quicker than the other’ which will make her go round and round in circles.

 At the moment, I’ve got the whole set-up running on the dining room table, measuring volts etc.

I’m using a Spectrum DX5e with mtronics ESC’s,set up so that both the motors are controlled by the LH stick. and it is possible to set them up as “tank steer”

Will I need a seperate power supply , just for the Rx?

If so, how big?

How much power does the reciever use?

A separate pack would be a good idea in this particular installation. You only need a 4-cell AA-size pack.  I’d recommend having a look at the Model Power website. One of their 4.8v x 2600maH NiMH packs will be ideal. You’ll also require a switch harness to connect it to the receiver.

John and James sell all manner of chargers and connectors; you can easily spend half an hour just browsing their website. As they say, I have no connection with Model Power – we just shout rude things at each other at the shows!

 

You will need to disable the BEC on BOTH of your speed controllers; there’s details of how to do this on the instructions for the Vipers or one of my pretty piccies here:

For Tank Steering you really need to fit a return spring and lever to the RH transmitter stick as well as the LH one. If you ring Horizon Hobbies then they might be able to supply you with the requisite bits – they did for me, but the guy to whom I spoke has now left.

You should then connect the ESC for the Port motor to the channel controlled by the LH up/down stick, and the starboard motor to the opposite stick channel.

 

Beware of the dreaded Spektrum failsafe! (you’ll find out………)

Just another quick question on the same subject.

 

I am intending to go the lo tec (lo cost  ) way and use re-chargeable batteries to power the Rx.

I will  also running the servo for the steering off the little battery pack.

OK, they only carry 1.2v (1.2 * 4 = 4.8v) and not the volts that a 5 pac  or an expensive recharbable pack chcarries.

Will this be a problem

Not at all. In fact a 4-cell pack is standard with every RC set, and all are 4 x 1.2v nominal (but getting on for 6v when fully-charged).
