Lady Betty

Hi, I have just finished building Lady Betty, a 36R pond boat. I began the project with my late father in law in 1992, he purchased the plans in 1964, the plans are a 1950 design by "Shipwright". The reasons for the 50+ year time lapse is another storey 😄. I am curious to learn how the name "Lady Betty" became associated with English Pond boats if anyone knows. I would also like to know who "Shipwrights" is and the association with English pond boats. Thanks, Jim

The original magazine articles on 'Lady Betty' appeared in the magazine The Model Mechanic, August 1950 and September/October 1950. The build by Shipwright continued with the early editions of Model Maker i.e. December 1950, January 1951 and February 1951. There may be something in these magazines which could help with your research.

The location of your post is fine. Don't worry too much about that aspect, if a post is really in the wrong place, Colin Bishop will step in and move it. (He's the moderator for the site)

Quite a lot of pond yachts were given ladies names in honour of wives, girlfriends and probably mistresses. What the origin of Lady Betty is I have no idea, but the articles mentioned by Tony Hadley might give you a clue.

Thanks Gareth for the feedback. I thought I had responded to Tony but it doesn't look like it registered in the thread. I had located the articles earlier but not studied them in detail. On first glance they seem to be a reprint of the instruction booklet my Father in law had purchased but I will take a closer look. I also had a question about who "Shipwright" might be. On the title to the booklet Shipwright was listed as the he desighner.
