i am currently restoring a model of the Duke of York battleship which our club recieved from the late Jimmy Smith who built her in the early 1970’s. After his passing the ship fell into total disrepair and worsend after she was extensively water damged by our club’s bunker’s roof leaking because it had not been waterproofed at the time.
By the time she arrived at my home she was full of dry rot and mould. The plywood used in the decks and superstructures started to delaminate and disintergrate once work started on them. This situation required a virtual rebuild of the ship.
My aim in this rebuild is to try and preserve as much of the original build as possible in honour of the builder. I have had to make many parts such as missing guns and many more A huge amount of work has gone into the model and she is slowly becomming a proud ship again. I have created an album of the ship but it shows the ship as she arrived at my home. More pictures will be posted on her as she is today. I have also created some other albums as well.
