        Hi Paul,

The D9 Cat had the bigger engine, always my favourite, 😀

          Hi Ray

I can see that you are a connoisseur of heavy plant, the D8 was my go to machine as could be quickly transported by road without escort, but my favourite is the D11 with the laser controlled blade, an amazing piece of kit especially when working twelve abreast.

            Hi Paul

Yes my miss spent youth ! Many unhappy hours with my chain man in the mud, rain or freezing site engineering 😀

Sounds a bit dodgy now 😯

Yes the machine driver let's the gps & laser do the clever stuff these days.

Keep us posted with your aeroplanes, I've just been given a 3d printed Spitfire it's just incredible 67" span electric powered but needs some money spent for esc & big lipos . .

It's just a massive Airfix kit, fortunately it has been stuck together & painted.

                Hi Ray

I remember those days up to the top of your wellies in sticky mud trying to set up the theodolite in a rainstorm and a long time before electronic surveying equipment. Up on the moors above Blackburn in January is not my ideal holiday destination.

I wonder if modern site engineers could even set up an optical theodolite never mind trig the setting out points.

They woud probably have to google "surveying" to find out what a theodolite is/was, and even I know what triangulation points are.

My abiding memory of optical 'surveying' instruments was in the Brabazon Hall at Filton, where they were assembling Concorde 02. The wing-fitting jigs were set up with optical instruments very much like a theodolite. I asked the bloke who was showing us apprentices round what tolerance they used. "Oh – just a thou on that one – nothing clever…"!!

                    Hi Dave & Ray

My first surveying was done whilst at the Collage of Building, I had to fix coordinates for a 1mm dia pin set in a concrete block that was part of a low wall. I was given a very old optical theodolite and my only reference point was 500m away around three large buildings and 10m lower.

To pass I had to be within 10 seconds of either latitude or longitude and within 10mm of height above sea level, it took two of us all day to get the correct coordinates.

                    Just for Captain Bob

I was going to use brushless but the petrol head in me just didn't like the idea of the plane sounding like a Dyson so I invested in a very nice 2nd hand 25cc Supertigre

                    25cc 1.jpg

                    25cc2.jpg

At least it will sound like a plane

Thanks Paul for that snippet of engine info

I had a Super Tigre once, but it was only a 2,5cc

One question….Do you have to fly it?

We used to go to all the shows……Old Warden, Cosford, Blackpool, Woodford, Southport of course, Mold Famau not forgetting Goosedale and Rolls Royce Nottingham. Barton etc

We used to take the caravan and later the campervan

Great times was had by all

                        Hi Bob

No I don't have to fly it but it would be like having a campervan sat on the drive and never going on holiday in it.

Yes all the models could go to shows but I remember how tired we all were after the boat shows were and not sure that I want to do that again.

I will stick to flying from my cousins farm.

Hi Paul I didn`t realise you had somewhere to fly!

                          That`s half the battle won!

You will need an exemption certificate of course

                          Any progress for us?

                            Hi Bob

My heavy drone licence allows me to remote fly aircraft upto 100kgs, but like I said before the bigger problem is insurance as these heavy model planes require a lot more skill and faster reaction times.

                              Hi Paul,

Are you in the LMA ? I've never built anything very big, but what is the weight threshold for the construction having to be checked by one their examiners ?

I'm amazed how big the engines are these days in airframe we only put 10cc glo motors in 30 years ago!!I

That ST 2500 will make a nice noise 😀

I know what you need, Paul, a PC Flight Similator?

They are just the job for practicing in the front room!

I`ve had a few and they are great fun

My surveying days are a little hazy now. Was involved in a 200 acre survey down south for which an oil company were looking at diversifying into greenhouse crops.

Best though was a chain survey that a colleague and myself carried out on a 12 acre pre-fab site in the summer of '76 which took 2 to 3 weeks. We'd start early and then retire to the pub at lunchtime!. I had a great sun-tan by the time we'd finished! I then had the task of drawing/plotting it.

No I'm not in the LMA but my insurance company has engineers that inspect my heavy drones and will also certify my larger fixed wing models. Looking forward to firing this beast up on the test bench, just bought a second one for the ME109.

                                    Hello Captain Bob

I could never get on with flight simulators, I don't know why but they don't sit right with me.

1976 Happy memories of keeping cool by riding my Goldstar along country lanes and the tyres getting thicker as the tarmac stuck to the rubber, I spent that summer working in the local boatyard and dinghy sailing on Tatton Mere and evenings spent in the local biker pub playing pool.

I've got 4 motorbikes, the oldest being a 1973 Triumph Tiger 750. Didn't use them much last year and was going to make amends this year – fat chance!

                                        Hi Chris

I used to enjoy my bikes and my favourite was a 1959 Bonneville T120, easy to run and maintain it was a lovely bike, I gave up bikes when I got married and started the family, but my last machine was a KH250, a triple cylinder screaming nightmare and the only bike that ever terrified me, apart from when I went round the TT course on the back of a Ducati.

                                        Happy days indeed

I've got a neighbour over the road who also has bikes and is very bored and a frustrated next door neighbour who bought a new bike just before the lockdown. He did go out for some vegetables yesterday though he did seem to take a long time going to the local shop!

Have done some great bike trips over the years, both here and in Europe, but Helen doesn't think she could cope with going on the pillion for many miles now. Got round that a couple of years ago on a trip to Spain with a few friends. I rode the Tiger 750 and Helen went with a friend in a Mini Moke and carried the luggage!

A very long stroke engine that, if you got the kick start wrong, would kick back and launch you over the handlebars.

Happy that this build will qualify as a boat I am looking forward to time when I sail its 108in wingspan at New Brighton.
