      Hi All,

I have just joined this website though I have been buying Model Boats for some time. I find It is getting harder to find it now in shops.

Now that I have half escaped the working rat-race I have more time to spend. I am looking to build a model of Ben Line's Benarty.

There was a series of articles by Jimmy Wood back in 2000. I have the first from June 2000 but none of the others.

Does anyone have copies they could let me have? If you could scan and email them to me I would be very grateful. Alternatively, if you send the magazines, I will gladly re-imburse the postage, scan the articles myself and return the magazines to you.

I looked in the archive here but it only goes back to 2007.

      Thanks in advance.

I have removed posts from this topic in the best interests of the forum. Those who have participated will be aware of the background.

If no one has responded to the original request by the time I return to The UK at the end of the week then I will check my own copies of back issues.

In the meantime it is worth reminding posters to ensure that your posts are as clear as possible in their meaning and not to assume that offence is meant when it may not be the case at all. Smilies are there to make up for the absence of face to face contact so use them if it is appropriate to do so and they help get the message across in the way you intend. smiley

          Thanks,

          Colin

The number of times we have seen this request?

I think it would be a great idea if a member of the ModelBoats team, scanned the old copies of the magazines and made them accessible to the Digital Subscribers

It would also increase digital membership?

            Is this a possibility?

Who did you have in mind Bob?! The digital archives go back to 2007 and are available online but there is no index or global search with the current software which you need in the absence of an index.

Back in the 1950s the issues used to be bound and indexed and you could buy the indexes but that fell by the wayside. In more recent years the many changes of ownership of the magazine have driven a coach and horses through any attempts at continuity and there are simply no resources available to carry out the huge scanning and indexing exercise you envisage. With this sort of work, once you stop doing it catching up becomes commercially impossible. It is all a great shame really as there is so much useful stuff buried away in those old issues that nobody knows about by there you are!

Every time somebody asks for an old article….Only that article need be scanned and released

As long as there is a search engine, the stuff can be recalled?

                Is this possible?

                Bob

Most things are possible Bob but whether they are affordable is another matter altogether. MTM are in the business of selling magazines and there is no money in setting up an archival service. They don't even have copies of many of the older magazines anyway. Building up a database of old articles would be nice but where would it be kept, who would be responsible for it and how could you guarantee that it wouldn't get lost or deleted during a change of ownership or the current custodian losing interest or falling ill etc.?

                    Hi Bob

It was a pleasure meeting and talking with you at Haydock Park recently.

You refer to the Model Boats Team, but there is actually only me full-time, with Colin subcontracted on a freelance basis to look after the forum and website, an arrangement that is working well. At the end of the day, sales of the 13 regular issues of MB which I produce, including the Winter Special, fund everything else including this website and forum.

I have kept in my system, PDF copies of everything that has been published in MB since I became Editor in mid-2007. Prior to January 2007, the company was not fully digital, so one has to fall back on printed issues for reference. That is why the digital arc=hive starts in January 2007. At head office in Kent there are some bound issues from year's gone past, but I don't have a full set prior to 2007 here at my home office in Essex, with some of the stuff in the loft.

The company management decided sometime ago that it was generally not cost effective to provide a bespoke copying service, since the time taken for someone to research it etc. and then copy and post out was not reflected in what could be charged, plus there being actually no specific customer service staff at the Edenbridge head office.

If I receive direct inquiries to the Editorial Office, then I do my best to assist, but for issues from some years' ago, one can only fall back on the kindness of people such as Colin and a few others who possess the necessary magazines.

As a foot note to preserving old copies of Model Boats magazine .last week I was staying with my daughter down in sunny Dorset and took the opportunity to spent a morning in Weymouth , In town there is this wonderful antiquarian maritime book shop . Looking through the model section my eye caught three bound volumes with only the dates on the binder , 1972-1974 , 1975, 1976. My sixth sense told me that these were what I have been looking for . Sure enough they where Model Boats magazines with all of my old articles from that high period of Model Boating , bound and in good condition. My own copies have long gone but I found what I was looking for . As a matter of interest the Jimmy Wood Model of MV Benarty is now in Virginia USA with my old friend Bill Clarke , a superb model for sure
