            Thank you Paul

            Very interesting discovery

Not only is the ship perfectly preserved, but the crew also!

I think Shackletons voyages were about the same era and his crew are shown on Facebook

            But not for the squeamish!

              Bob,

I don't really think you could call Shackletons voyages the same era as the last Franklin expedition; Franklins voyage took place in the second half of the 1840s, whereas Shackleton's first experience of polar exploration was with the British National Antarctic Expedition 1901–1904, led by Scott.

In terms of time it would thus be like saying that the Second World War was in the same era as the Iraq War of 2003 …

There is a sort of link, though, in that the éminence grise behind the 1901 expedition was Sir Clements Markham, who had been a midshipman on one the first Franklin rescue missions.

A very interesting book about 19th century British exploration, both in Africa and in the Arctic and Antarctic, is Barrow's Boys by Fergus Fleming (**LINK**)

                Thank you, Banjo

                Fancy you knowing that?

Pardon me for showing my ignorance!

Was Shackleton in the Scott of the Antarctic era then?

Suppose it was like me saying that the Great Banjo and George Formby were close friends?

                That was a joke btw

                  Bob,

Arctic and Antarctic exploration has long been a subject I find very interesting, so I have read a fair bit about it over the years. And yes, Scott (1868–1912) and Shackleton (1874–1922) were contemporaries; at first together as commander and subordinate on the 1901–1904 Discovery Expedition, and subsequently, after falling out badly during the same, bitter rivals within the field of Antarctic exploration.

And given that George Formby played the banjolele, which is quintessentialy the smallest kind of banjo, I don't think he would have had much to do with any Great banjo, no …

                  Mattias

BTW, for the sake of honesty I should perhaps say that although I knew the gist of the facts well enough off the top of my head, I did crib the exact years mentioned above …
