Help with rivets

Hi All , Can anyone pleases give me advice on the best way to reproduce accurate riveting effects on a model, i have tryed the superglue method but i could not get a consistant size and pitch and i have also tryed useing a Taylors wheel but this only made small pricks.

People have had success with using white glue or aliphatic which seems to make it easier to get consistent blob sizes. And if you get one wrong you can simply wipe it away with a damp cloth and try again.

As Colin says try white glue (I used PVA from the local stationery shop) and not superglue. Use a small syringe with the end filed square and lots of practice on scrap.

The photographs are my rivets, before painting, on the engine room and boiler house in the Guardsman thread. Ok the model won't win the gold medal at the ME exhibition, but the effect of the rivets does add interest.

If the panels are flat, you can use litho plate and impress the rivets with a rivetting punch or just a slightly blunt scriber down onto a smooth hardwood or an Edding cutting mat. Then glue the panel on with an impact adhesive.

Failing that, you can use Archer's rivet decals which really to work very well. I've used them on slot car bodies and railway vehicles and the carrier film really doesn't show!

I`ve always used thin card for the plating and a spring operated centre punch to create the rivets

Hi Gareth , Thanks for that , i have done some trails and and the rivets look good the only issue i have is the card curled up at the edges ( did you have this issue)

Dave. Do I take it you have cut the plates out and are then embossing them??? if so, a ploy might be to draw the plate on an oversize bit of paper/card/woteva and then tim afetr embossing. Just a thought..

Hi Dave,

I have not had a problem with the styrene sheets curling up at the edges. My outer lines of rivets are 2-2.5 mm from the edge of the sheets. I make the indentations with the plate resting on a green cutting mat. After making the indentations I rub down the underside of the plate with some 80 grade abrasive paper to key it and also abrade along the edge of any plates that it overlaps. I also make sure the adhesive goes right up to the edge all the way round.

Are you using styrene sheets (eg Plasticard) or card as in thin cardboard?

Hi Lads , I am using 0.25mm Styrene but reading your comments i think i was working to close to the edge , I did some more trials last night on oversize styrene and then trimmed it to 3mm from the edge .PROBLEM SOLVED so thanks for all your help .
