I'm planning on a visit to Buxton next weekend to see the models on the lake at the Pleasure Gardens (next to the Opera House). I'd like to take 'Huntress' to sail but I'm unable to contact anyone from the club as all their E-Mails are via MS Outlook, which I am unable to use.

Does anyone have an address for one of the club's officers or know if guest sailing is welcome?

          Dave,

The e-mail addresses given on their website are respectively [email protected] and [email protected] for those two club officers.

That said, the phrase "Membership includes Third Party Insurance and the assurance that only members will be sailing on the lake" on the front page of said site seems to give a message on the discouraging side about guest sailing … but you could always ask!

The alternative is a very late brunch with 24 members of my extended family in a 'cottage complex' about five miles out of Buxton on the A6. That 24 includes 6 under the age of 5. On their own they're just about OK but put six of the little beggars together and you have indescribable chaos. I would rather be out sailing in the cold!!

I'm a careful boat-driver but I may well check my Home Insurance. Many policies will add third party cover for nothing as long as you ring them first.

Thanks to all who have replied so promptly – I'm sure I'll enjoy the club's Christmas Sail with mince pies and mulled wine. I'm beginning to look forward to this weekend after all!

If becoming an OAP is supposed to make you grumpy, bad tempered and opinionated how will we know if your transition has made any difference?

I hope your mates Jack and Daniel helped you enjoy your big day beer

A fair question, grasshopper. I've now had all my crowns and bridges sharpened to bite yer legs!

My benefactors yesterday included Lord Nelson, Timothy Taylor and Vin du Jour as well as Jack D. With friends like that who needs friends? I had a pint for you as well, Paul…face 21

But you'll need a motorised zimmer frame to get within range Dave. Anyway, welcome to the club – it's all downhill from here.

The visit is this coming weekend, and I'm escaping from a large family weekend/Christmas gathering at a 'cottage complex' in a village just a few miles down the road – at least for the morning. Six infants all under 5 years old is a recipe for indescribable chaos. Like Woody Allen said about dying, it doesn't frighten me any more but I'd rather not be there when it happens.

It was TTL. I haven't the faintest idea about the rest of your posting but I'm not going to go Googling for ladies flannelette underwear…

It must be a very long hill, in which case I'll forgo the zimmer frame and just roll on down, baby.

I spent a very pleasant couple of hours with Buxton MBC today. There were about ten models sailing – including an alligator (head only) and a lighthouse which looked suspiciously like a "borrowed" traffic cone with a rotating beacon and tinsel – and we were treated to mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies! My thanks to Keith Holmes and the other members for their hospitality.

Might get to see your boat in action on You Tube if he was. wink
