gears for electric motors? where to find those

Hello to all

I'm new in this forum and i'm a total noob regarding rc boats, but i'm a modeller and i build rc model aircraft but all of them are glow powered.

so finally i got really interested to this new hobby ,so much that after buying some magazines.. two of them actually (rc model boats magazine of course) by luck maybe , the two magazine's had plans from the same designer, glynn guest. and all apear realtvely easy to build. the model that i want wish to built after a search through the net is the Miami crash boat by glynn guest.

so to cut short , i noticed that the designer likes to use gear driven power setup, all the motors use a reduction gear box , one gear on the motor and the other for the shaft, by problem is , where to find thes type of gears, i tried e-bay but no avail maybe i'm doing something wrong. i was considering using a direct drive that for me is more simpler but looking to the plans it looks there i'snt much room

any suggestions? or good sellers from e-bay ? also they must be able to ship overseas. to Malta

Cornwall Model Boats advertise a World Export Service so you should be able to order with confidence. I've always found their service superb.

I've used some of the gears myself with no complaints.  The gears are available for a range of shaft diameters, and they also provide shaft adapters for other sizes, for example 5mm down to 3.2mm etc.

They also do some nice geared motors with inbuilt right-angled drives

For those of us that don't like paying for things, discarded printers are a treasure trove of gears, drive belts ,springs and motors! (The stepping motors make great micro generators…)

Since Graupner have been going through their troubles, I look for available items and a dispiriting number seem to be "not available, no restock date". It could be that the new dynamic management have seen a different core market and lost interest in model boat builders. I hope not, but accountant driven companies have a tendency to fail moderately slowly without anybody apparently being to blame. At least, not in higher management.

The geared units were very convenient, useful, simple to use and compact. I hope they reappear. The alternative is direct drive, probably a different motor, and probably a different layout of things like batteries, servos, radio and ESC.

Does anyone make helical gears? Straight cut gears are unfortunately very noisy. I have tried all sorts of noise deadening and even boats that don't make much noise in the garage soon exhbit noisy characteristics on the water. I have tried Graupner, Robbe and Master airscrew and a few from other sources.

Gears with teeth cut at 45 deg would be much quieter. Surely some manufacturers have thought about this by now.

If you want helicals then HPC do them in steel, brass, tufnol and delrin. If you do use helicals you need to be aware that as well as a radial thrust on the gear there is also an axial load that needs to be catered for – the gearbox end plates might need to be a bit beefier. I have no connection with HPC but they have a good reputation for their products.

I have had a brief look at their website. A huge range so I will need to do some careful measuring and a detailed study of what I need to replace some of my straight cut gears on my ships before placing an order as I am in Melbourne, Australia.

If you have a model shop near it might be worth looking to see what Tamiya do in spares or what is available for the rc cars, buggies and choppers. Not sure if the gears would be helical but they should be good quality especially if intended for use with ic engines rather than electric motors.

The boats / ships are all electric – there are pictures of some of them in my photo album, and the main issue is the noise reduction, hence my leaning towards the helical gears. I will give these HPC gears a go. Thanks again for the link.

have you considered using toothed belts instead? Just about all gears have noise issue, particularly in a model boat hull which acts as an amplifying soundbox.

Hi Colin,

I have, and have seen some models using them, but they take more space in narrow hulls, and I am conscious of possible difficulties in getting replacements.

My later models have plates soldered to the end of the prop shaft tubes and the motors fixed to them. Then the two gear wheels. There is no need for a coupling with this arrangement.

Is there some measure of noise difference between a set of straight cut gears and helical gears? I may also ask a couple of experienced rotating machinery engineers at work for their opinion.

Yes, I appreciate there can be mounting problems when using belts. In a couple of my models the motors are actually mounted on the underside of the deck to get the room I needed! They are small models though.

The general consensus is that the helical gears will be quieter than the straight cut ones, so I will get some and mount them. I will report on the findings. It may be the start of a new trend. Thanks to the MB forum & Keith in enabling me to obtain a supplier.

There is also an Australian maufacturer of helical gears but the smallest bore is 6.35mm which is too big.

I am currently building a 1/72 scale Z-39 WW2 destroyer and this will be a good ship to try them on.
