      Hi

I am trying to locate a set of plans for a Fairey Huntsman 31′, If anyone has a set to loan , copy or sell I would be most grateful. I would arrange collecttion or postage and scan and return if loaned.

      hopefully Allen

I have a copy of the plan for the original Modav Huntsman 31 kit @ 47". It came from a very nice chap in Australia called Bill Honeyball and is as rare as rocking-horse dung, so I’m not prepared to let it out of my keep. Where in the world are you, and could you handle a CAD file format (e.g. DXF or DWG) if I had the plan scanned and E-mailed to you?

BTW it was me who designed the thing back in 1972, but let’s keep that a secret shall we?

          Hi Dave

Very much appreciate your effort, I have no problem handling any CAD format. I live in Sheffield in the UK and my E Mail is [email protected] and you are right about the rocking-horse. I picked up a part built kit on E bay, it is old and some of the joints have come unglued and a lot is missing so needs a total rebiuld.

          Many thanks Allen

            Hi Dave  and Allen

I’ve just unearthed an original 1970’s Modav kit in my loft. I’m not really into models but stumbled into this forum whilst looking to see if it’s worth selling on.

I can’t believe I’ve found the orginal designer.

It has all the original parts, is unbuilt and has the hand drawn printed plan book and foldout (with your name at the bottom Dave!!).

I guess my main questions , have I unearthed a gem?, and where’s the best place to sell this onto someone who’ll be able to put the time, skills and effort into building it?

(I’m not sure ebay is the place to do it?).

            Thanks

             Steve.

PS – Hope you don’t mind a newbie crashing in on your subject. It’s the most relevant discussion I could find on the web. I genuinely want this peice of history to go to the best home. Poor things been stuck in a loft for best part of 10 years. (And to be honest it would be a nice bonus to make a few quid along the way )

              Thanks again

               Steve.

                Steve

It would sell on E bay if thats what you want to do, but I would put a reserve on it of at least £40 and you could find it go a lot higher than that as the older kits even part started ones fetch a lot of money. I payed £30 just for a part built kit of the above mentioned boat with a lot of bits missing. So best of luck

Yep; guilty as charged, but someone had to have created this beast after all. I never thought I’d become a part of history in that way!

My pipe-dream is still a 1/12 scale version for twin Speed 600s, but I’m afraid that’s on hold while ever we have the ACTion business. Just too darned busy!

I’d be curious to see if the kit fetches more money than I was paid to design it…………

                    Hi all

Well after digging through the box of bits and checking all the parts off on the back of the plan booklet, I was tempted to have a go myself. However I decided reluctantly to put a lengthy detailed decription on ebay a few nights ago, and as suggested plumped for a fairley hefty reserve.

I couldn’t believe the response !! I knew it was something special, but never dreamed it would be bid on within the first hour of a 5 day auction !!

It currently stands at £85 with 3 days to go and 16 watchers. Dave I think you might need to negotiate some royalties

I’ll keep you posted, and thanks for all the advice. Hopefully someone will build it, and post the pics on here, I’d like to think it will go to someone who takes time, effort and skill to do it justice.

I know this is several years later to the original posts I have just put an unstarted still boxed early 1980's Precedent Huntsman 46 and half inch kit on ebay it was my late uncles.

Funny thing! An ex neigbour of mine gave me an old part built cabin cruiser many years ago and it's been languishing in the back of my garage ever since. Seems it is a Modav 31 inch Huntsman. Hull and part of the superstructure is built and OK and there are some other bits and pieces including a pretty fragile plan but no instruction book. I suppose I should excavate it for a closer look.

Is the reply to that question still the same Dave?

The Fairey range are such good looking boats and a large scale version such as your 1:12 version would be fantastic to own.

I have a 46" Precedent Huntsman that I bought ready built but unused for a long time and my Uncle owned both a 31 aft cabin and a Super Swordsman 33 many years ago (1:1 scale).

The Modav Huntsman 31 kit was produced in two scales. At 1/8 it was 46" long and at a rather strange 1/11 scale it was 34". If you have a Modav kit then it's one of those. The only 1/12 scale plan I know of was accredited to "Model Boats Staff" but in fact was designed by Vic Smeed. I have no plans to build a 1/12 scale version although it would be very easy either to scae up the 1/16 plans or just get out my copy of Vic's drawing.

                                      Hi Dave,

                                      Thanks for your reply.

It's the Precedent version that I have (and their Perkasa too).

Because mine was bought already build, I don't have the plans for the Huntsman and to be honest, have never attempted the build of a wooden hull as yet.

One thing I would like to (attempt to) do is to convert mine from Aft Cabin to Aft Cockpit instead.

The hull of the Huntsman 31 is the sleekest of the wooden hulled Faireys and a full open cockpit version or Sport as it is called will make a nice looking and performing model. Will be interested to see how you get on with the conversion.

I'm building all my Faireys at 1:12 and one of my next builds is going to be a Huntsman 31 with the more common aft cabin. I've been half-heartedly looking at the drawings and given the poor weather at the moment am thinking about making a start on this project.
