Hi new member I am building a Dumas Shelly Foss 36" size. I have 2 12volt motors. Do I need 2 ESCs or can I run them both with !.

Charlie. You can run them with just one, assuming the current draw is not very much, or two with a "y" lead, or two with a proportional controll widget so that you get some steering effect from the props.

As this is a tug, and I dont know what sort of prop arrangement you have on this, a widget and two ESC may be good for manouverability.

What sort of motors are they? Forums I have just googled intimate that this runs gearing as the props are of a fair size, and so the current draw should be modest.

            Hi Ashley

Your right about twin esc giving far better manouverability, forward on one and reverse on the other works very well on larger models, helps me avoid crashing into the bank (sometimes)

I find that keeping a beady eye on the boat is the best way of missing the bank.

One Sunday, I had out the "Glorious" which has a wickedly sharp bulb at the front, and at a moment when I was distracted, rammed,. at full speed, into a soggy part sunken log that the ducks sit on. It buried about one inch of bow underwater into the log… and took about 10 mins of tharshing propellors and assistance from other boats to wag the ship before it came free.

Such are the joys of boating.

I got the running hardware with the kit which two 2.5" dia props

                the motors are rated to run at 4750rpm 3.2 amps 0.4312 in-lbs . I plan to use a 3 t0 1 gear reduction.

Ran the motors with no load and each one drew about 1.8 amps.

I am also trying to convince myself to use the Kotz nozzles as per the drawing

sorry about imperial numbers our next door neighbor ( usa ) has not caught up with everybody else.

                  Hello Charlie

Kotz nozzles are worth fitting as they give far greater thrust control.

Charlie. Dave has the way to go..He is the man for this sort of thing.

.unless all you want to do is potter about the pond.

PS dont forget a fire squirter. Nothing impresses at the pond side more than a big squirter.

Much cheaper than getting the boat to turn circles in its own length. (they dont appreciate that so much)
