Hi all,
I have been going through some very old family pictures and found some great official naval photos. I had thought to scan them and share them on here but on the back they are marked ‘ministry of information’. So would I be breaching copyright? Any ideas?

If they are very old then there is unlikely to be a problem unless the images are currently being marketed – by the Imperial War Museum for example. Posting low resolution copies on here should be OK. If anyone complains we can always remove them.

Hello Charles

The Ministry of Information was a specific department created briefly at the end of the 1st World War and resurrected again during the 2nd World War, it was the central government department responsible for publicity and propaganda and as such all information issued was intended for public consumption.

Therefore you should have no problems using the information unless as Colin says the specific images are currently being marketed by an official organisation, a quick search on the interweb should be sufficient to answer this question.

Thanks guys, work will keep me busy for the next couple of days, but I’ll post them as soon as I can.
They are quite stunning in 10 x8.
