Like many people I find that the Halfords primers are good colours in their own right.

The red primer effectively simulates underwater antifouling while the grey is excellent for many warships. However being primers they do need sealing. My usual practice in the past has been to brush coat with Ronseal Polyurethane Interior Varnish but this is becoming less easy to get hold of and does leave large areas vulnerable to brush strokes. Editor Paul Freshney sprays thinned coats of Ronseal with an airbrush but he has more patience than I do!

I came across this clear coat from Rustoleum **LINK**

and ordered it to try it out. Initially I used a test piece with Halford's red primer and the result was excellent with just a slight darkening and a very slight sheen finish so I have recoated the bottom of my Fishery Cruiser and am pleased with the result.

I do have some Humbrol matt varnish spray but it can be a bit hit and mist!

If you are using white primer then the best top coat is probably Halford's Appliance White which gives a very pure white.

Halfords do a clear lacquer spray, and that goes on very well over the red, white or grey Halfords matt primers. And it dries very quickly.

I have tried that Bob but it seems to be a bit on the glossy side.

              HI Colin

Halfords do both Satin and matt with a full gloss as well, if you are getting a slight gloss from the matt lacquer its possible you have not shaken for long enough or continued to shake as you are applying the paint, the matting agent is heavy and soon settles out, and clumps in the bottom of the can when left standing.

Thanks for that Mark, I wasn't aware that Halfords did the matt and satin finishes. I will try them next time.

Colin, sorry slightly bum info. Halfords only do the satin and matt in the 300ml size, not the big 500ml, but, they will make up a large can to order!!!

That's OK, as long as they do it. I will use that next time. In the meantime the other stuff seems to have worked well enough although it is very volatile & smelly!

Went into our big Halfords today. Couldn't find the satin or matt sprays with the regular car paints (or anywhere else). Where should I be looking?

Hi Dave, sorry for the delay in responding, been away for the weekend. I saw the satin and matt on a separate shelf to the side of the spacialist paints, not in the racks of normal paints.

The Halfords in Stockport is not that big, so i would imagine that yours will stock it, just thought, they were in crome coloured cans not the grey of 'car paint' cans.

                        Hope this helps mate
