Here is the most comprehensive set of photographs I have ever seen of a Liberty ship.

Thanks for that Bob. The pictures are pin sharp and provide massive detail. Where do you stop when building a model? I thought I'd got away from rivets with a Liberty ship but no, she's got two lines of them around the scuppers. Checked mi fiber glass hull and they're not there- doh! That alone is going to take a month of Sundays!

After leaving no end of hints and clues I think a copy of Mr Stewarts book might arrive by reindeer soon!

Some Liberty ships were rivetted, but a lot more were welded, it depended on who built them!

Thanks Bob, Need to do mi research and then choose the final image to go for. I don't think she actually has to be the City of Ely unless I'm missing something subtle. I mentioned earlier that according to the internet she was one of 184 'SAM' ships (Superstructure aft of Midships). As yet don't know much about this and don't know if this is reflected in the hull I've got. If I can get away with it then my Xmas is planned. Gas fire, can of beer and a few good books on the subject! I hope to be much wiser in January!

Hi Everybody and Happy New Year!

Liberty Ships in Peace Time by I G Stewart – ISBN 0 646 05987 4 – an absolute must read! Incredible depth of information, illustrations and photographs! Thanks Bob W for the recommendation. Mi problem now is what hull number she's going to be and at what time. Have ordered large quantities of weathering powder!

                Happy New Year everyone,

Glad the book finally arrived. As they were all more-or-less identical to begin with, you have a great lot to choose from. During the war they were all grey, a colour that I have never liked for ships, much preferring black or green, but no green Liberties to my knowledge, although plenty of black ones.

After the war, some of them were changed dramatically by lengthening, but that was always obvious. Others got bigger funnels after the war.

                Looking forward to seeing progress.

                Bob

                  Hello Len.

I have been a fan of these for over sixty years. I have been aboard quite a few of these and I have heaps of photos of them and have accrued loads of info. I also have a pal in Glasgow who is an even bigger nut than me. I have been debating if I should by a mouldeans hull. I have a niggling doubt about the hull shape. The shape of the bow doesn't feel quite right? Too much rake? I have been looking for a source of good photos of this product and yours is the first that almost catches the view I want

If you want details there is a place in the states I think it is called 'Maryland silversmiths' I can supply website address. They do a full set of detail drgs at 1:96. Body lines plans, profiles, frame station sections et al. They charge $90 plus postage. JRHaynes does some 1:96 components. The detail you found in the hull is engine room skylight. Good books are the Liberty ships by Mitchell and sawyer, 100+7 (author?), liberty en Guerre (author?)

Could you take a pic of the bow in profile and also either port or starboard bow to show the shape of the waterline. Could you also do the same for the stern?

I would be much obliged as it would help me decide if I should buy a hull or not. I am a bit too old to scratch build the hull now but if the hull is ok then I could buy one with confidence. Hope you don't think me impertinent to ask this.

                  Regards,

                  Pete

                    Peter,

Len doesn't seem to have been on the Forum for a while so may not see this.

Fleetscale also produce Liberty ship hulls at 1/96 and 1/128 scales.
