Having finally grown weary of building models of ships that hardly anyone is inetersted in, I thought I would move to the two-dimensional for a change. I am no marine artist, but thought I might be able to manage technical drawings in the form of ship plans. I began this British four-masted barque a few days ago. I have completed the deck and profile and am 3/4 way through the sail plan. Very enjoyable at the moment. Takes up no space and no toxic fumes to breath in either.

          Bob,

I think that. like most of us on here, I build models that I am interested in. Whether other people like them or not doesn't really concern me.

I think that whatever you do has to be something that you are personally happy with. If a change to drawing fits the bill then why not? They say a change is as good as a rest and obviously it brings new challenges which is good.

          Keep us posted on progress.

I agree with that, but my problem is that I build them so fast, it is extremely important that I am able to get rid of them, because we don't have the room to keep them all. At the moment, we have plenty of room because the moment I said I was stopping taking private commissions, what we had stored up sold out within ten days! With private commissions, I was nearly always building something that I was not really happy with, and as you say, that is not really satisfactory.

I don't suppose I will be able to keep off model building for long, but at the moment, drawing is a pleasant change. At the moment, I am even considering whether or not to carry on my blog website. I saw a joke online a while back where one dog was saying to another "I used to have a blog, but decided to go back to pointless, incessant barking!" I thought that was hilarious and the truth of it really hit home with me. I often feel like I am talking to a brick wall for all the response I get most of the time.

Believe it or not, I am really interested in what other model shipbuilders are doing as long as it is not along the lines of the obligatory Cutty Sark, Bounty, Victory or Titanic.

Incidentally, when I used to put images on here, they could be enlarged by clicking on them! Now the images are stuck at the same size. When entering an image I get a geat spiel in some foreign language – what is all that about?

I completed my sail plan today after three days work. Not perfect maybe, but it is my first attempt and I am very happy with it.   I can't sort out adding images any more it comes out completely distorted – so deleted it and put it on as a link instead!

Very nice drawing Bob although I prefer the models…

Yesterday I went to the Society of Model Shiprights Biennial Exhibition in Orpington and there was some rally nice work on display which included a welcome number of miniatures including this one of Benloyal.

Incidentally, I think that the reason that the image handling has changed is due to the introduction of the updated editing software. What I normally do is to create an Album on a particular theme and add images to that. Then you can display them in a post by using the Insert image from album button which is what I have done above. I'm afraid the site software is a bit quirky in this respect!

                  Colin,

Thanks for info. I think that BENLOYAL must be the one that was in a recent SHIPWRIGHT journal – very nice and well made!

I will try entering my drawing again via the normal method just to see what happens!

PS – See what I mean!    Completely distorted!

When you say 'normal method' what exactly do you mean?

I clicked on the image item above, 3rd from right. I then inserted the URL from image shack. That is what I have always done in the past and they have come out OK until today when the above came out all squashed in the horizontal plane. The first drawing in this thread (above) was posted using this method and, as you can see, it came out OK.

                        Bob,

Our IT support have confirmed that there can be problems when inserting images from external sites depending on the proportions and size of the imported image. This is associated with the introduction of the new text editor and does cause some problems. The advice I have received is as follows:

Basically, the forum images are fine when they are inserted from albums hosted on Model Boats, they resize correctly and don't distort. The problem comes when members insert images from externally hosted sites, the photo may be distorted if it is wider than we display it when inserted in a forum post. This has been a problem since we changed over to the new text editor some months ago.

If members insert a photo from an external host using the image button, the only way I can find (so far) to guarantee the correct proportion is as follows.
                        1) Ensure the lock symbol is locked to constrain proportion
                        2) Then delete the width and height sizes in the edit window so that both fields are blank
                        3) This means that the photo is very large in then preview window, and in the text editor view, but when the message is posted, it will display correctly.

                          Colin,

Thanks for info. I see the distorted image above has now corrected itself without me doing anything at all!    I assume Katy Purvis put it right!    Thanks!
